LP SEARCH (FENTONES)

Postby Geoff Alderton LH » 27 Mar 2013, 17:06

Hi all.
Is there an LP that has the three main Fentones instro's on. ie; The Mexican, The Breeze and Lovers Guitar?
Shane Fenton's Moody Guy only has The Breeze and I can only find the other two on 45's. Any help would be apreciated
Regards Geoff.

Geoff
I think the only compilation that has both sides of the Fentones 45s is
the Cd Shane Fenton and the Fentones - The complete A &B sides on EMI gold label.
An earlier LP version on See for Miles label only had The Breeze and I on it.
Hope this helps

I think it unlikely these tracks were ever issued together on vinyl, but they are included on the CD compilation, On Disc And Radio, issued on Briney Spears in 2004, available from Leo's Den.

If it is of any help at all, these tracks appear on you-tube. Under-rated weren't they !

The Fentones re-formed for the 1995 Pipeline Convention. Original members Jerry Wilcock (lead), Bill Bonney (bass) and Tony Hinchcliffe (drums) were joined by Mike Beddoes (rhythm). Their set was The Breeze & I / Lover's Guitar / Hideaway / Just For jerry / The Mexican / Memphis. The DVD (as with all Pipeline DVDs from 1995 onwards) is available. The band had lost none of their skills and put in a polished performance. Did you know that Just For Jerry does not refer to Jerry Wilcock, but is their tribute to Jerry Lordan?

And talking of tributes, The Fentones had their own tribute band, The Fentone IV. Bill Smith (lead guitar), Steve Longden (rhythm guitar), Barrie Dickinson (bass gtr.) and Dave Harrison (drums) played the Pipeline Convention in 2005. Their very fine set was:
The Mexican / Just For Jerry / Golden Earrings / Magic Carpet / Emico / Amapola / Flight To Paradise / Take Five / Mick's Tune / Teen Scene / Karelia / Farewell To Casablanca / Gypsy Woman / Spanish Tango / Moonshot / Light In The Window / Gringo / The Breeze And I / Heartbeat

Great band, the Fentones. Very dynamic & up front. When they played an instrumental, they smacked you in the face with it. Nothing subtle like the Shads, but great '60s musicians. I saw them live, with Shane, in about 1962 at the West End Ballroom in Brum & they looked good & played as though they meant it. Very Pro. Silver Lame suits if I recall correctly, with Shane in Gold.

The Briney Spears CD also includes the six tracks recorded at the 1995 Convention. It seems extraordinary now that Keith Moon supposedly auditioned for the band following Tony Hinchcliffe's initial departure in 1962!

Presumably, Mick's Tune is a tribute to Mick Eyre, which I think was used as the signature to the BBC Light Programme series with Shane Fenton in the early 60s.
