Once again BBC show their lack of respect and interest in The Shadows. Today Blackburn in his inimitable style plays almost every track in their entirety except for Theme For Young Lovers, all we got was two verses. Fk sake we don't get all that much of our music played on radio these days is it too much to ask to hear one track the whole effing way through??

Considering that "disc jockeys" don't play records anymore and that they are only really presenters nowadays, I think that this is a very harsh and uncalled-for personal comment about Tony Blackburn.

This will be the same Tony Blackburn who got the boot for daring to play Cliff records against the instructions of the radio station.

Perhaps we should think ourselves lucky that 50-odd year old records are being played on the radio at all instead of complaining about them being editted.

Some people on this site probably don't consider TFYL a true Shadows number because Jet and Tony weren't on it.

How can you say TFYL is not a true Shad's number?
Maybe they had to edit to break for the news or something? As for 'thinking ourselves lucky' that songs 50+ years old are played, have you not listened to Sounds of the 60's on Radio 2?

So Flingel Bunt, Atlantis Foot Tapper aren't true Shads numbers either then I take it as the Shads only seem to be the Shads in Jet and Tonys time? Funny I thought the Shads have been in existence as the Shads from 1959 til 2009. Apparently according to some here they only existed from 1959 til 1962! So who were Hank, Bruce,Brian and the various excellent bass players actually playing as if they weren't the Shadows?

My point in the opening thread is why is it always the Shadows tracks that get cut?

I didn't say that TFYL wasn't a true Shadows number. I happen to think that it is a great representation of the Shads composition and playing.

I said that "some people on this site probably don't consider TFYL a true Shadows number because Jet and Tony weren't on it". I did not say that that was my opinion and don't believe that I implied it either. However, going by some of the threads over the years it is patently obvious that there are a significant number of people on here who think that the first line-up was the be-all and end-all and nothing was the same afterwards. Thank goodness for change. The guys had to change "that sound", whichever one it was as not only the music changed but their abilities as musicians.

It is far easier for a radio station to interrupt an instrumental than a song with vocals. It could be that a disproportionally high number of Shadows numbers are cut this way because of their higher success rate with instrumentals than anyone else.

I remember back in the seventies when 'Turn Around And Touch Me' was released as a single Tony Blackburn played it daily on his morning Radio 1 show. However, it was always played as the last record before the 10 a.m. news and it was always faded out halfway through. I wrote to him to complain but I didn't expect a reply - nor did I get one!

So, the perceived bias against the Shads by the BBC isn't just a recent thing.

Nothing really new about fadeouts on Radio shows then?
Remember the snippets of new releases on promotional Radio Luxembourg shows
in the60s and the instrumental or big band number leading up to the hourly news summary
on BBC Radio - The Joe Loss show a prime example!!!

Tony Blackburn mentioned either before or after the track was played, that it was written by Bruce, but because of illness couldn't attend the recording session, and that the rhythm part was played by Hank - so even if we didn't hear the whole song, at least there was some little known (to the average listener) info. to accompany it.
