Walt,
The feeds from the stage microphones are split in the control area at the back of the room between the mixer for the PA and a 24 track recorder. The PA mix is done by the multitalented Bob Doré (keyboard player, sound mixer - and of course Mr 'Admin', the webmaster of the Shadowmusic site). The PA mix is
not used for the DVD recording.
The sound that you hear on the Youtube clip and on all the recent Pipeline DVDs is mixed from the 24 track recordings by Alan Taylor and myself. We set aside a day purely for the audio mixing, which is done in my studio. The finished mixes are then synced in the post-production video edit sessions to the camera audio before the video edit takes place. Announcement mics and audience applause feeds are also synced in during the prep for the video edit.
Er . . . . . sorry if I have destroyed the magic! In the early days of recording the Pipeline Convention (the VHS era) a live mix was done on the day but this had to be done on headphones in the hall - not ideal.
