All this is interesting conjecture but it lies in the past. Hank said he had retired, which I took to mean that he was no longer in the music business for a living. If so, anything he does now will be because he wants to, not because somebody is telling him to do it. Who would such a person be?

Can't we just be grateful for all the music he has made and leave the guy in peace to do as he wishes?

Iain :)

Thanks for the message, Tony.
I am very much looking forward to the album - I think it's nice to see Hank doing something different and it's obviously a style of music he enjoys very much.
I much prefer him trying something different that this, to a cover version of a recent chart hit. Yes, there may be more accomplished guitarists in this style - but that's not the point, is it? I'm sure he will bring his own style to the music, just as he did with the 'guitar player' album, which of course didn't feature the red strat (except to a very minor degree).
Thanks to Hank, I have listened to a bit of 'gypsy jazz' and I have to say, I like some of it a lot. I also really enjoyed the recent album (and tour) from Martin Taylor and Tommy Emmanuel - which was in this broad style.

So good luck to him and I look forward to buying the album.

Hi all.
I myself, am a jazz fan, gypsy jazz or any other jazz. I dug out my mid 70s Joe Pass album and gave it a spin. Just as Jim N points out the 1964 recording of Django's Castle is superb and is to my mind the bench mark for other artists recording Django's composition's. I do hope Hank's version set's a new standard.
Regards Geoff.
PS; Pity we wont see a vinyl issue.

I agree TOTALLY with Justin Daish on this topic !! Hank has been mismanaged in the past, and it is such a shame that an artist of his calibre is left high and dry without a record company wishing to help in new guise as a Gypsy Manouche player.
DIDIER, I completely disagree! I have been into Gypsy playing for the past 6 years and the Shads, the past 46 years and I love them both.I have seen fantastic players such as Jon Jorgenson and Robin Nolan, and fully appreciate their talent.
However, what Hank brings to the table is a wonderful feel and TONE,just like he did on the Strat. He has a brilliant finger vibrato and melodious feel on his Gypsy soloes that some of the others do not,but without the OVERFRENETIC playing of some manouche players that drift in and out of the melody ,sometimes throwing themselves off cliff's musically speaking and at the expense of tasteful feel. Listen to COQUETTE and NOTO SWING by Hank on the 'STARS OF GYPSY SWING' album and his tone and feel shine right up there with Lollo Meier and Jorgenson!! Also relisten his Gypsy/Latin version of Windmills of your Mind and the amazing soloes, every note having its rightful place but with some amazing speed playing.
I play myself, being Lead Player in 'The Epitones' and I personally rate a solo as being exemplary if to change even one note would ruin it.ie Impossible to improvise!! Hank has these gems both in his Electric and his Gypsy playing.
Going back to Hanks change of style,he did it in the past with a great album called 'The Hank Marvin Guitar Syndicate' in 1977,with some fantastic arrangements and amazing sounds,so why are people not giving him a break with Jazz, which was one of his first love's??!! I personally think that under the right managment, Hank Marvin could bring melodic Gypsy Jazz to the Masses.
So finally lets get behind the man who is the main reason we started this site in the first place!!

If a musician thinks he is being mismanaged the solution is simple. Get a new manager.

If he wants to make a record, he doesn't need a record company, he can self-publish. It's the new way of doing things.

Anyone would think we were talking about a victim here!

Maybe it's not a simple as that if he's under contract to the manager. I've just finished reading Pete Townshend's autobiog in which he talks about the problems The Who encountered when they tried to cancel their management contract with Chris Stamp and Kit Lambert. The Who's manager now is Bill Curbishley who is listed in my Led Zeppelin box set as joint manager of LZ along with Brian Goode. If artist/manager contracts are the normal thing, then perhaps Hank and Brian Goode will have one. Maybe Arpeggio would know. You're good at Hank & Shads history Rob. Any idea if a contract exists ?
