Hi Jim and Didier,

I agree about Willie and the Handjive, there doesn't seem to be any discernable echo as such, however the flip side Fall in Love with You does seem to have a simple echo. Anyone know when that one was recorded?

The famed Abbey Road reverb is indeed intriguing and no doubt contributed to the sound of the early recordings. I would love to get an impulse response for it and load it into my Altiverb, but I gues that will never happen!

Regards,

paul.

A tape recorder was used to provide a pre-delay for the famous echo chamber (which in fact is a reverb chamber), they could have used one to provide some delay on Hank's guitar.
There is an interesting article about Malcolm Addey's first recording as sound engineer (before that he was assistant), it was for Cliff's Move It : http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/nov03/a ... tracks.htm (I translated it a few years ago for our French site).
I guess the gear used was the same for the following tracks.

In Post #7, Dave suggests that 'Livin, Lovin Doll' features 'THAT SOUND', but that was recorded in November 1958, so even pre-dates the Strat.
What do we make of that?

Like I said earlier on in the discussion, my interest is 'That Sound' - not that guitar or that echo, which is why I believe the amp and studio were 80% of it.
For delay, we used to use a tape recorder turned upside down with a two metre tape loop, weighted down by a 10'' metal spool which spun around freely under the machine. You could set the speed to 3.75 - 7.5 or 15ips for the speed. A classic example of this can be heard on Eddie Cochran's 'Summertime Blues' on the talking bit.

In post 7 I suggested that 'Livin' Lovin' Doll' had THAT SOUND - NOT 'Livin Doll', although the guitar solo in that one does sound 'right'.

'Fall In Love With You' was recorded on November 19 1959.

I forgot to mention it was the REDD17 desk not the REDD37 desks used in the early days by the Shadows as there is a picture in the Sound on Sound article on Malcolm Addey mentioning it so that clears that little part up. This is the desk available at ToeRag Studios in London. The REDD37 desks were used later by the Beatles et al.
