Windows 7 - the hype has started again

Each time Microsoft brings out a new OS, the magazines welcome it with gushing headines ("The Greatest Windows Ever", "Get The Most From New Superfast Windows", etc).

Then when the next version comes along, the same publications finally admit that "Well, actually Vista had many problems, people didn't like it and didn't want to upgrade", etc.

Now that Win 7 has been launched can anyone point me towards any publications that tell the truth from the word go and tell users of the new OS how to get rid of all the cr..... unwanted features that Microsoft feel they have to include. (Like 'You have committed an illegal operation. Do you want to tell Microsoft about it?' or 'It is dangerous not to have a firewall' (even though the computer has no internet connection).

Difficult, when I've go thousands of pounds invested in specialist hardware and software that is only made to run under Windows.

I have 'partitioned' the Mac and have used Windows XP without any problems for three years. Folks 'in the know' always told me that the only way to get the best out of Windows, is to install it on an AppleMac - they are so right!

Perhaps I don't KNOW what I like............but I LIKE what I know.............so I'll be sticking with XP.

Hi,

I've been running the release candidate for a few months now on my 2004 laptop.

It installed quickly with no problems, everything works and it's faster than XP.

On my new Samsung laptop it's quicker than the Vista that was on it when bought,
but the only problem is that the brightness keys on the keyboard don't work with it,
so it's back to the hard drive with Vista on.

I have to agree with Dave. WIndows XP on a Mac is superb, even then the Mac OS is far superior to WIndows.

Have been running Vista for past year with no real problems at all... clean install seems to be the best option when upgrading.. on BBC News website one of their correspondents upgraded 3 machines with Win 7 and not without some problems.. I think upgrading an old OS is full of potential problems so I find backup old files etc then clean install usually goes OK for me that is

Hi Ray,

I use Apple Mac's and Adobe send me free of charge Master Collection, because I run a software Evaluation software service, I am interested in you perhaps reviewing CS5 when it comes out, I give Windows and Mac software free to those that have the capability of writing a review on the subject.

Of course If I receive Master Collection CS5 when it eventually is released, my CS4 is up for grabs for Mac OS X.

We BETA tested W7 for the last 2 years in various stages of development right down to the RC, both at home and in my company. It has performed well in all the tasks I have tried with it during development, and the full OEM W7 Professional version is now the basic OS for my 3 home computers (replacing VISTA Ultimate). With the company, I have opted for W7 Ultimate (the only basic difference being the encryption capabilities), we didn't use VISTA at all in the company during the life of that product because of compatibility problems between it and some of the Windows XP based software that were (are) current industry standards -W7 doesn't have the majority of compatibility problems with 'older' software or hardware that its predecessor had so that is another reason why it has met our requirements as a replacement for XP Professional for workstation deployment.

I offer that information not for guidance, but purely as a statement of my experience with W7, I hope it helps you in making your own decisions with W7.
