The Call Up.

Postby captainhaddock » 23 May 2013, 18:18

I recently watched the British Rock N' Roll documentary on BBC 4, mention was made of the call up. As I understand it, men born after October 1939 were exempt, but Jet Harris was born in July 1939 and Brian Locking was born in 1938 so did either of them receive the dreaded brown envelope ?.

My Cousin who was born in 38 certainly did his, but it was degered until he was 21 because he was on a 5 year apprenticeship, common practise for the time

I was born in 1942 and missed National Service by 9 months when it was scrapped.

HI

There is a reason given why Jet missed the call up in 'The Shadows by Themselves' but I can't remember what it was and i am not at home to look!!

It is mentioned in The Shadows Story by Mike Reid that Jet got his call up papers and went for the medical but found out beforehand from someone how to work it by swallowing balls of chewing gum so they would look like ulcers on the xray and he drank a bottle of gin the night before because it would show similar symtoms to diabetis. It worked for him anyway.
Don't know anything about Licorice?
