Actually this site is already a merger of three former sites Andy. The sites in question all sought to do much the same thing so it was a good way to centralise things and at the same time discourage those who wanted to rock the boat.

I am not a member of Charlie's site, nor of the TVS one, so I don't know what would be gained. However it would need all three sites to want to do it. From what I understand, though, they all have separate raisons d'être.

Your contributions to this site are well worth reading so I do hope you'll continue to make them!

Best wishes - I

Hi to Kon Tiki (Björn)

Wouldn`t support a change of this site to face book. Or do you want the NSA watching more easily and automatically what we are exchanging in informations? (One of the many reasons I stayed away from face book); because the server of this excellent site is still in England?

On the Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong last week, I listened to the airline’s compilation of “60s and 70s Classics.” They had a pretty good selection, but, yes, the program began with the Beatles.

I figure that the Ventures/Shadows era was a unique one, but just a short blip in music history, lodged between Rock & Roll and the Beatles. If one were born just three years too late, one could miss the Ventures and the Shadows completely, just like the small towns on highways in the U.S. that you wouldn’t see if you happened to blink.

Many musicians, even professionals, I know or met don’t know the music we play and wouldn’t think of including them in their repertoire. Our bassist Anna, just ten years younger than me, had never heard of the Shadows.

While a rabid Ventures fan would tout the group as the greatest instrumental band in the World, the total fan base is probably quite small, negligible in the music world. The Shadows have a greater following I think, except in the U.S. and Japan, but even that is not a large number. Both are fringe-end groups, far from current mainstream, and diminishing in population I think.

I think that if we put together another of our Madeleine Cookie Company shows, which is unique here because they are scripted, b;ocked, and have large casts, we can still generate a good audience, at least for the next three years. What I am thinking of doing, however, perhaps as a prelude to the next series of shows, is a production for YouTube, done on stage with a small, live audience, and with a script and screenplay study. If I can figure out how to justify commercial sponsorship, it would be fun to focus on three or so pieces. Maybe, that’s a good topic. How do we utilize the new media?

Best,

Andy

Hi Andy

I think it's quite natural that every generation will have their own choice of music and expressiveness, for those who were around in the 50s/60s it was a very special era that to some extent has withstood the test of time because of the lasting impression it made. Back then Cinema also had a great influence on popular musical, but as you quit rightly say other mediums are also part of the equation now.

There is more exposure to "electronic" music with pounding beat that is all part of the movie/disco/club scene, with high impact vocals that are less censored and more expressive, perhaps having more relevance as attitudes change. To some extent live band/orchestra presentations have moved on to technology providing visual spectacular, which possibly makes it more difficult for up and coming solo artists to get their first foot on the ladder and make their way. There will always be exceptions, but it's almost as though you need a scale of production behind you now.

From the point of view of keeping the music alive, I think the artists themselves were very special in that they really enjoyed what they were doing and maintained the enthusiasm and popularity by continuing to interact with fans and to do gigs and concerts throughout their lifetime, which brought it to a whole new audience. The fact that there are still extremely talented young people that are enthusiastic enough to take the music forward in their name is a great tribute to those fantastic people who made such a real contribution, not only to our enjoyment of the music, but in inspiring new players/vocalists. This is and will be their true heritage.

I am sure for many there will always be nostalgic reflections to those exciting days of the raw music that took us from ballroom to "Rock n' Roll".

Regards

Gary

Perhaps I can get things moving with a little discussion on the topic of “Friday on my mind.”
In the wonderful little book “A pocket guide to shadow music” (Rob Bradford & Les Woosey, Ed. Malcolm Campbell) they write, “though the keyboard contribution from 2:11 on is surely too busy and over-ornate.” I would like to suggest that keyboards are not used and that the effect is produced with a guitar by doubling the playback speed. Several of the notes are markedly bent – an effect that probably wasn’t available on keyboards at the time.
The same effect is probably used to produce the “chipmunk” vocal on Chelsea Boot on the same album.
What do you think?
Cheers, Richard

Hello everyone

There are many disparate themes emerging in this one thread, which is suggesting it's not so quiet here as some thought.

May I suggest you start separate topics for separate subjects, otherwise confusion will reign. Well, certainly in my head anyway!

Best wishes - Iain
