Spot on Ivo! I'm suffering from 'information overload'!! Yes....I meant to say to Philip that "Shadow Music" was there...then just mentally 'blanked' and switched into "Sound Of The Shadows" mode!! Yes...you are quite correct. Anyway....Philip.."Shadow Music" is present & correct...in stereo (only). "S O T Shadows" is in stereo & then (on CD6) all of the "S O T Shadows" tracks make their CD debut in mono!!! Right...I shall now go and lie down in a darkened room with an ice pack. Nurse.....the screens!!!

Reply to Frank: There are no stereo versions of "Saturday Dance" and "Lonesome Fella". In 1969 mock stereo versions were used on the "Somethin' Else" LP. A few years ago Magic Records (France) put out the CD "The Shadows / The Drifters / The Chesternuts". On that CD both "S D" and "L F" are listed as bonus tracks in stereo. Undoubtedly this is where your information camr from (viz -the tracks being noted as being available in stereo). The tracks were not stereo - but, in fact, the 1969 EMI mock stereo versions - which sound awful. Thus....on this 2013 set...the mono masters are being used. A decision was taken by the overseer of this project not to use any live recordings as the brief was to concentrate solely on studio recordings.

Reply for Frank.
As far as we know this will be presented in a 6-CD jewel/plastic case, no box surround. As Rob said, costs have been taken into consideration, so should fit easily into your collection. Of course this could change but doubt it.

Thanks Ivo. An interesting list. First of all....I've now omitted everything post - 1966 - as The Early Years ends in December, 1966. Firstly - several unissued mono tracks not on your own listing: Back Home* / I want You To Want Me* / It's A Man's World* / My Grandfather's Clock* / Theme From The Boys* / The Girls* / Sweet Dreams* / Granada* / Adios Muchachos* / Valencia* / Las Tres Carabelas* / Brazil* / The Lost City* A Little Bitty Tear* / Blue Sky, Blue Sea, Blue Me* / Bossa Roo* / Five Hundred Miles* / Cotton Pickin'* / Deep Purple* / Santa Ana* / The Windjammer* / Dean's Theme* / Breakthru'* / National Provincial Samba* (*all of these will be on the new 'Early Years' collection). I understand that "Chu - Chi" was on a scarce Australian CD over 20 years ago - but dubbed from vinyl. Hence - it has been decided to include it here as a first - time on CD from the EMI master tapes. Likewise - I gather that "Shotgun", "Giant", "Theme From Shane" and "Theme From Giant" were issued in mono on a South African CD during the late 1980s - but very poorly dubbed from vinyl. So...for such an important CD - this will be their very first appearance on CD in mono taken from the EMI master tapes. Which leaves the material on your list. It would have been impossible to include any more mono material on the Early Years - as it was always going to be a 6 CD set. Who knows? Maybe there might be scope sometime in the future for another 'Rarities' type set incorporating the (as yet) unissued mono material.

Ivo: The tracks which remain to be issued on CD in their mono mix are: - Blue Star (the original 'uncorrected' mono mix) / - The Breeze And I ( I believe that this may have been issued on an Australian CD?) /- It's Been A Blue Day (the 'echoing' version, previously only on a French CD from the late 1980's or early 1990's) - er, so it HAS been out on CD? / - Walkin'- / The Miracle (there has been one mono CD issue on the "Jumpin'" various artists CD from 1990/1991) - so it HAS been out on CD? / - Ranka-Chank / - Main Theme / Little Princess /- Me Oh My / - Friends / - Alice In Sunderland / I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Arthur / - I Met A Girl (previously only on the 1988 Australian CD "The Shadows Favourites") - so it HAS been on CD? / - Late Night Set / - Benno-San (the corrected stereo-to-mono mixdown, first issued on the second pressing of the mono "Shadow Music" album) / Will You Be There (will be on the new set) / - The Dreams I Dream (will be on the new set) /- My Way / - Spanish Music / - Medley: a) Finders Keepers b) My Way c) Paella d) Fiesta

Scope for further discussion eh?

Bests....Rob

Some tracks from my list have indeed been issued on CD's outside the UK or on various artists CD's, but not on UK Shadows compilations. Will the tracks "Will You Be There" and "The Dreams I Dream" be presented in mono on the new 6 CD box?

For Shadows UK singles between Apache and Slaughter On 10th Avenue, I have compiled a list of sources for mono versions on CD. The list is not exhaustive, but I have selected the most obvious source in each case, even if there are one or more others. For that reason, some are very well known (eg, the mono/stereo versions of "The Shadows' Greatest Hits" and "More Hits!"), and others far less so.

I don't cite any single before Apache because all singles before that have no stereo versions and so have only been issued on CD in mono anyway, and Slaughter On 10th Avenue is cited at the end of the list because the UK Columbia single was the first Shadows single to be issued only in stereo (though it doesn't say so on the label). In effect, there has never been a mono version released.

Here's the list (pasted from an Excel sheet, though the formatting on this site doesn't allow the spacing, etc):

"Foot Tapper" is in mono on the 2004 mono/stereo CD "More Hits!", but it is the earlier "Summer Holiday" take. The stereo mix on that CD is the single version. "It's Been A Blue Day" on the "A's, B's & EP's" CD does not have the echoing effect of the original B-side, so it is an alternate mix. "Maroc 7" on the "30 All Time Greatest Hits" CD is presented in its stereo mix, with the mono introduction from the demo single present as the previous track. I have a copy of the Dutch issue of the "Slaughter On Tenth Avenue"/"Midnight Cowboy" single and both tracks are presented in a mono mix, probably a stereo-to-mono mixdown.

Fascinating information as ever. Take the 'echoing' "It's Been A Blue Day" for example. At the end of the 1960s I mainly decided to collect LPs instead of singles. As I had "I B A B Day" on LP (as well as "Shindig") - I sold the single & I probably hadn't played the 45 rpm version of "I B A B D" for several years by then. So...I had completely forgotten about the 'echoing' version (if I ever noticed it in the first place). Refs the new 6 CD set....the claim about 31 mono tracks new to CD is qualified thus: 1) UK 2) Shadows' compilations 3) Taken directly (and remastered) from the EMI original analogue master tapes. On this basis the fact that "Shotgun" / "....Shane" /"...Giant" / "Mustang" / "Chu - Chi" have appeared in South Africa & Australia c. 25 years or so ago and dubbed from vinyl has been discounted. The 5 aforementioned mono tracks are definitely (along with 26 others) making their very first appearance on a UK Shadows compilation taken from the original masters. As there is still some unissued mono material then, who knows, some - or all of it - might appear in the future -especially if this new set sells well.
