The South African CD (and perhaps an Australian one) with tracks dubbed - poorly - from vinyl is puzzling.

The "Mustang" EP was released in South Africa on a local pressing, so unless the stampers were sent by EMI London to EMI SA, there must have been a local copy of the mono master tape available.

Of course, there is the question of the legendary archive fire (which also apparently destroyed the master tapes for the "Live in SA" tracks)...

Hmm? Oh well...someone who has those CDs told me that they thought the tracks were dubbed from vinyl. No matter. None of the 31 additional mono tracks (remastered from the original EMI master tapes) has ever been issued on CD in the UK. Will that do??

Bests....Rob :D

Oh, they are partly dubbed from vinyl. I was wondering why, that's all...

Ah...maybe the S A tape vault fire (not sure exactly when that was) did play a part....??

Looks like a cracking little 'big' set to me!!!!
I've got the original 'The Early Years 1959-1966', but always thought what a pity that so many tracks from the relevant years were missing... well, hey presto!
Yes, I've got the majority of these tracks already (all of them apart from the mono mixes), sometimes several times over (Apache, FBI, Wonderful Land etc..) but it'll be nice to have all these fabulous Shads tracks in one box set.
Superb!

Oh, I forgot... obviously I haven't got the new mix stereo versions of Blue Shadows, French Dressing or Lady Penelope either!
That wasn't a senior moment, that must have been a 'junior' moment... I'm only 31!

What's not to like? How about the fact that Tony Hoffman got screwed over. I'm not going to be buying it.

Keep on rocking Tony!

Bless you Andrew, I was just sounding off because it's the little people who do all the donkey work for these companies with no thanks or loyalty. I used to tell EMI tape library which tape to use and the shelf location where it could be found because they were too thick to research and do it themselves. The stereo version of Hank's 'London's Not Too Far' used by SFM for example, I told EMI where that was. All those tapes that are deemed 'lost' they'll be there somewhere, probably right in front of their bleeding eyes.
It sounds a great set and I'll no doubt get it for completeness and you should too, but I'm humbled by your loyalty - thank you
