A question re iTunes.

Postby AlanMcKillop » 25 Jul 2013, 13:22

My old pc has passed away (rip) and I was wondering if there was any way that I could upload onto my new pc, some 13,000 tunes/songs which I have on my ipod classic. Without guidance, I wouldn't try this in case I lost it all.
There is a possibility that I can recover data from my old hard drive, but thought I'd ask first about the whether or not I can transfer.

There is a piece of software you can purchase which allows you to download all the music on an iPod to a new computer - but I've lost the details. Search engines should find it so take heart and have a look! (It does not download fine detail like playlists.) Will have another look around for the details myself.

For example:-

Touchcopy

(Not used it myself though)

I used IPod pc transfer a couple of years ago when a similar thing happened and it worked very well. Its a fee download that allows you to transfer just 1 song at a time or you can pay for an upgrade (it was $23 in 2010) that allows you to do it in one go. Obviously be careful when downloading free software as it can be packaged with spy and malware

Hi Alan,

I copied all my friend's music on to his Ipod from his desktop PC and then from the ipod to his notebook
using Itunes, it recognised his account name and all his files play on all 3 devices!!

Hmmm...

The traditional USP for iTunes (as far as music rights holders are concerned) is that it doesn't allow transfer from an end device (like an iPod, iPhone or iPad) to the device running iTunes (typically a Mac or PC desktop computer). This is important as a reassurance to record companies that the portable device does not present a danger of easy file-swapping.

All the aftermarket apps which allow file transfers from the iPod to the computer (with a view to allowing that computer access to files not directly loaded to it from CD or legitimate download) represent a way of getting round that restriction.

If iTunes is now allowing it, either the latest version's been changed by Apple in spite of the industry agreement or it's been hacked by a third-party app...

ok, I'm struggling with Syncios as it only part recognises my ipod classic. It shows the capacity, what's used and what's free, it recognises the serial number and a few other things, but it doesn't list the content (over 13,000 tunes) so I can't proceed.
What I have managed to do in the meantime, is get access to my old hard drive and copy the 15gb of music to a portable drive. I've also downloaded ITunes to my new pc, so the next question, where/how do I copy across the tunes from the portable drive to what file/part of iTunes? Any further help would be appreciated.

I assume the files are in AAC (m4a) format.

I also assume that each album's worth is in its own folder.

First, copy a CD (any CD) into iTunes on the "receiving" PC. That will locate the m4a files for that album somewhere on the hard drive (probably within the "my music" hierarchy).

Go into the "my computer" dialogue on the "receiving" PC.

Do a search for *.m4a

Locate the folder where the m4a files are stored and copy your other album files into the same directory.

Newer versions of iTunes will even recognise the album artwork for you.

JN

PS: Syncios recognised all the music on my iPod, which is the standard 20gb one from around 2005 (certainly not a new one).
