I had a great seat, or so I thought at first, in fact I was right in front of the rhythm AC30, regardless of who was playing or which pickup they used, all I could hear was an icepick treble which completely obliterated anything else.
Now I've been standing in front of a guitar amp for many years and doing discos since 1969 so I reckon I can cope with loud noises, but by 7 pm my ears had gone, I'd got a splitting headache and felt decidedly dodgy.
I tried standing at the back but by that time it was just a noise so sadly I went home.
What were my views well band 1 from what I could make out seemed pretty good, band 2 were struggling and it was quite clear their rhythm guitar was not happy with the sound of the amp, band 3 was good, but I've worked with quite a few tributes over the last decade some good, some excellent, some not so good, but all I could say of last night was he had a pink jacket and sung Cliff Richard songs.
I'd looked forward to the event for months and was gutted to have to leave, in fact it's now 10.30 Sunday night and my hearing is still whistling and compressed, I accept that maybe the amp was focused on my seat and maybe others didn't have the same problem, but whoever sound checked should have stood out front it was just screaming treble.
During act 2 I did go to get a drink and even at the bar the rhythm guitar sounded far to thin and loud.
Maybe if you got most from the PA it may have sounded better.
So did I enjoy it, well this was the 5th or 6th at Lakeside I've been to and the only live music event I've ever left early.
Will I go next year if there is one? If Bruce is at the helm maybe, if he isn't, probably not.
