Isn't there a 1965 concert available (live in Amsterdam?). I vaguely remember reading something about that.
I think that Alan Hawkshaw was chosen as a replacement for Bruce because of the trend of band line-ups very typical in those days: lead guitar, bass guitar, drums and keyboards (organ, piano and/or electric piano). Alan Hawkshaw is one of the most accomplished, professional and versatile musicians/composers of the UK and I think he would have been an excellent choice for a 'fifth' Shadow from the late 1970's onwards, in case Cliff Hall wouldn't be available. He has of course been excellent on the 1969 The Shadows/Hank Marvin single "Slaughter On Tenth Avenue"/"Midnight Cowboy" and The Shadows' studio albums "From Hank, Bruce, Brian And John" (three tracks), "Shades Of Rock" (the whole album), two tracks on the "String Of Hits" album and one track on the "The Shadows Silver Album" and "XXV". He also features on some tracks of the two Marvin, Welch & Farrar albums.
On the Japanese "'Live' In Japan" album though, he tries his best to play on organ and piano the parts previously played by Bruce on rhythm guitar and that is something that just doesn't work. I have been listening quite frequently to this live album since 1993 and have become used to it, but, and I have to agree with Malcolm Campbell about what he said about the general performance in his pocket guide, the performance of the whole group is not top-notch, though they do seem to have enjoyed themselves that evening.
