Hi,

That picture appears in Mo Foster's Excellent book Seventeen Watts, it's a
much clearer copy, the caption says it was in 1960, no date.

Logically it makes sense to use lower power amps in recording studios but as has
been said many times, and AC30/4 makes the same noise as the AC15 because it uses
the same front end as the AC15, with a few minor component differences.

Hopefully I'll get up close and personal with Phil Kelly's TV front AC30 Twin tomorrow!

I agree, but there are those who say that the AC30's were used in the studio's and that they took the AC15's for live and tv work :? (the other way around), which makes no sense at all.

Hi Alan,

Remember when Bruce said at Shadowmania that they used AC15's
for TV shows because they were lighter to carry than AC30's.

Anyway Alan, you'll never stop the speculation, it's like the old "Fiesta Red" chestnut,
it just keeps on going!

It's a known fact that the TV front AC30's were lined with Foil to stop noise from cameras etc.

Phil Kelly's AC30 either has foil in it or shows signs of having had foil in it!

Perhaps to stop speculation all groups ought to document every thing they do in minute detail!

Remember it well Amanda, I also remember him saying that he never played a 'white' tele until photographic evidence proved otherwise. :D

He'd also forgotten about the white Strats until he saw the evidence...

But then, how many of us can remember what we did at work 45 years ago!

I only have a photocopy of this music so have no idea of the date when the music was published, but I firmly believe Cliff played a few little guitar motifs on the track 'Some Are Lonely'.
He wrote the song, of course, and it sounds like an acoustic being twanged at various stages.
And from memory I think there was a Cliff session on one of the days 'Some Are Lonely' was recorded.
Could the pic have been taken that day?

I'm no expert on guitars and amps so perhaps the equipment in the photo makes my theory completely wrong.
Engineer Peter Vince always said that if extra percussion was needed or hand claps or whatever, he and others helped out.

Just my take on it.

For what it`s worth Cliff said on one of his radio broadcasts with the Shadows he whistled on Stars Fell on Stockton so at least he did perform on one Shadows record.

Hiya Hoffers,
Not impossible that Cliff may have done a little strumming on "S.A.L." I suppose - but that track was recorded in December, 1961. The photo that everyone's referring to was used on the sheet music for "Quatermasster's Stores" (issued July 1960) must have been taken in 1960 itself. Actually Tony (as I know that you will be able to answer this!!!!!???) what time was the "Apache" / "...Stores" session because (in the relevant photo) the studio clock is almost at 2.40pm.

Best wishes,

In Mo Foster's book "Seventeen Watts?" is a picture of Bruce which is said to originate from the Apache session.
Compared with the picture from the Quatermasster's Stores sheet music both must be from different sessions as Bruce wears different trousers and I think it's unlikely that he changed them during one session.
