Being non-British, I do very much admire the English language ('English' English that is) and its mostly dry and 'implicit' humour and quips. Even though "Scotch On The Socks" and "Winchester Cathedral" are 47 and 46 years old respectively, I still laugh when I hear John's vocal interludes during the former track and the whole of the group during the droll intro to the latter track.

With the limitless it seems, issues of out of current copyright material on 50/60s CD compilation issues, the question
must be is it making money or profit for these issuers/ record labels and what are the actual sales in numbers?
Rollercoaster at one time were among an elite band of Companies specialising in this type of market , and doing it very well too.
Now we have new entrants with a lot of mish mash stuff poor sleeve notes etc.
John Beecher would of course know that fans want a quality product, and will pay at a full price amount CD
He is the guy to make that decision on possible future issues ,based on sales and profitability ?

Wouldn't it be better if they just wiped Dear Old Mrs Bell? It's one of the worst tracks they ever made, i always skip it. Why they released it as a single in 1968 was beyond me, it was never a potential hit.

Wouldn't it be better if they just wiped Dear Old Mrs Bell? It's one of the worst tracks they ever made, i always skip it. Why they released it as a single in 1968 was beyond me, it was never a potential hit.

I suppose it was due to the success of Keith West's Excerpt from "A Teenage Opera", released the previous year. A sad, wistful song about someone in society who doesn't know how appreciated they are by some people. Dear Old Mrs Bell is one of my favourite Shadows vocals. I wanted to perform it with the Shadowers, but after seeing so many people deride it on the internet I've decided to ditch the idea. Such a shame. Not only do I like the music, but I think it's a dark yet beautifully delicate acknowledgement of the more unfortunate, lonely figures in society. It encourages people to search beyond someone's reputation and see the person. I love it.

Mrs Bell... To paraphrase Miss Jean Brodie, "for people who don't like that sort of thing, that is the sort of thing they don't like."

There's a lot about that number that's good. I quite enjoy watching the version with Brian unusually out front. Once a year at Shadowmania was probably enough for me but I'd never wipe it!
