Had "Dear Old Mrs Bell" been released by Marvin Welch and Farrar, a few years later, it would probably have been more acceptable.

Hi all
It's been a wee while since my last posting as I forgot my password.
My question here is what the hell is wrong with the song Dear Old Mrs Bell? It's only on the similar lines of Eleanor Rigby only better sung, or Rod Dickhead Stewarts Georgie or any other in favour band/ artists contribution of this type of song. It seems at times The Shads can do no right in some of the material they put out and I myself am quite critical on some of the album selections but I'm afraid there is a lot worse than this song out there!!

Awwrabest, Ian.

It's the effect that the words have on the listener. McCartney's lyrics have a genuine sadness about them, and are a valid insight into the lives of lonely people. Dear Old Mrs Bell simply sounds twee.

So it's more the case of who sings the lyrics. Would John and Paul have sung "Dear Old Mrs. Bell", then it would come over sad, but would Hank and Bruce have sung "Eleanor Rigby", then it would come over twee? ;)

No, the actual lyrics themselves are the most important factor. The singing has to be right, of course, but the other factor that adds poignancy to Eleanor Rigby is George Martin's string arrangement.

However, if you don't listen to the words, it's a good song musically.

How do we feel about "London's Not too far" ?. Does it make any difference that it is a Hank solo rather than a group effort ?
Was Hank Solo in Star wars ?

Again London's Not Too Far, an excellent song in my personal opinion as are Girl On A Bus from Est 1958, Ronnie and Wish You Were Here from the MWF albums and Guardian Angel.

A lot of people dismiss the Polydor years but they did release some good stuff, Guardian Angel is probably one of the best of that era.
Is there any unreleased material from this period (1980-1990) i wonder?

I think it's all a matter of taste, really!
