I forgot to mention one of the great features that the BT player in the app JamUp includes - the ability to change individual track volume, pitch and speed, on the fly.

A lot depends on whether you play at home or gigs. For me, a mini-disc would be difficult to work with in a live situation compared to iPad or computer where you can see all your playlist at a glance and make selections and adjustments immediately. Especially at such times, say, as when you need to change the order of your list at a moment's notice to accommodate requests, etc. I do have a mini disc but haven't used it for a long time, having enjoyed the benefits of working with a larger display.

Thanks for all your replies, guys. I've only just round to reading them since I was busy with a band rehearsal yesterday.

I've got a lot to consider, but must admit I like the idea of SD cards! That's one solution I hadn't thought of.

I have been retired from gigging now for a few years due to rheumatoid arthritis in my fingers so I am a bit out of touch with technology & equipment but I used to find my Sony MD player/recorder ideal after previously using a Roland MC50 with a Roland Sound Canvas. The tracks on floppy disc took too long to load each time keeping the audience waiting especially if it was a dance floor where they all went off while the next track was loading. The Sony MD solved that problem.
One problem with using backing tracks though, you can be accused of miming.

I've successfully used PlayBack player (Free) by Axel Schneider, on my net book, with the backing tracks on an SD card.

It pauses at the end of each track, you can set individual volume for each track, you can assign lyrics from pdf files and it comes with a Break Music player (no pause between tracks) for your breaks. There's a version fro Windows and MaxOS X.
