Kennedy. Where were you?

Postby Detailed Infinity » 22 Nov 2013, 12:26

50 years today. We should all recall when we heard the news.

I didn't hear 'till the Saturday morning on the bus to work at the South Yorkshire Times where I was an apprentice (we worked a 44 hr week in those days). I'd been in the Ivanhoe club in Consibrough with my mates until 9:30 pm then ran home to watch Kathy McGowan on Ready Steady Go then straight to bed and up for work the following day. Heard the news from fellow passengers at 07:00 Sat morning.

Like (probably) a couple of million of others right across the north of England, I heard it from Mike Scott, who was presenting the Granada Television regional news programme "Scene At Six-Thirty". This was at about 18:45 on Friday 22nd November 1963.

It was of very little significance on the day, but the Beatles' second album, With The Beatles, was issued on the 22nd November.

We had visitors in and I was upstairs in my bedroom listening to the radio when the news broke.

I was standing on a cold and dark station platform at Effingham Junction waiting for a connecting train home from school. British Rail announced it over the tannoy - very depressing I remember ! I even recall where on the platform I was !

All the best,

Nick

Playing a gig at a Coventry pub. Someone said, "Have you heard President Kennedy's dead?", and I waited for the punchline...

I had just left work in Mytongate and was making my way to the bus station. As I arrived at the junction of Princes Dock Side and Whitefriargate, I noticed a paper seller with a headline board announcing the death of JFK.

I was just starting to get a little group together and I went to see one of the lads, Dave Orme. His sister Linda told me he'd died. It would have been about 18:45. I knew he'd been shot when I got home from school.

Missed the chance to do an overdub of radio news clips to Alphaville's 'Forever Young'. Not a video you understand--it would have been purely audio.

Too late now I'm afraid. I'll not get another chance, the vocal track somehow fits the mood of the time. He was of course Forever Young.
