I went to the Shadows 'downunder' tour concerts in the late 80's but don't recall the setlists. What do come to mind though
are a couple of vocals. Can anyone confirm that the Shads did 'You Won't See Me' and 'All By Myself' or have I lost more marbles
than I thought?
Cheers,
JB

I have heard reports of You Won't See me over the years.

Some years ago, I was sent a cassette (remember those?) of a Shadows concert at "St George's League Club" in Sydney which featured a vocal arrangement of All By Myself. Still have it somewhere.

So I suppose the answers are:

(a) You Won't See Me - more or less certainly

(b) All By Myself - definitely.

Hi John,

Am I wrong ?

Or was it maybe the smaller frequency range of the sound of the radiotransmitters on Hank and Bruce's guitars? Or did they use normal guitar leads?

If I remember correctly, the switch to radio links for the guitars was made in 1983, the same year that the Mesa Boogie amps were adopted.

I went to see The Shadows (the first time) at Coventry during 1983 and although I can't remember the set list (I think I did write it down as I was doing a report for school at the time) I can remember Bruce mentioning that some of the audience might have noticed that the guitars weren't plugged into the amps, that they weren't miming but trialling out some British technology in radio transmitters.

Jim and Ulrich,
Many thanks for your prompt and reassuring responses. It seems I haven't lost it quite yet. ;)

I remember them doing 'You Won't See Me' several years earlier - 1981 I think. I seem to remember Alan Jones took lead vocal. They also did a great Cliff Hall piano feature around this time called 'You Get Nasty When I've Had a Few'! I accept your point, Ulrich, about Guardian Angel not having been released yet but would still have thought they'd have been keen to try out one or two of the numbers on that seaside tour - On A Night Like This had a good summer-y feel to it.

Many thanks,

Clive

The Shadows did The Beatles' "You Won't See Me" during the 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1985 tours. "All By Myself" was a song featured in any case during the 1987 and 1989 Australian tours. "You Get Nasty When I've Had A Few" was (I think) only played during the 1980 Autumn tour through the UK and Europe.
I still don't get why the "Guardian Angel" album wasn't as heavily promoted by Polydor like for instance "Moonlight Shadows" was. If it was, then it might (in my opinion) have fared better chart performance-wise. Maybe The Shadows didn't play any of the tracks on it during the 1984 tour, simply because they hadn't finished recording it.

I saw them in the late eighties here in Australia, don't remember everything they played, but I do recall Bruce's radio thingo packed up and he used a normal lead instead.

They used Boogies and Hank had the Roland echo units.

They did the comedy bit where the stagehands bring out high stools so they could sit and play Nivram, but Hank didn't get his, and called out 'where's mine then?' the stool was then thrown carelessly on stage from the wings, but it went wrong and hit him!
