Dvd Format -Help needed

Yes my Philips domestic dvd player does play avi files that I have downloaded without any problems.

Chris also has a player that will do this as well

I never thought that playing avi files on a dvd/blue ray player was in anyway unusual.

Interesting point you have raised though, I'll have a look around later today to see if I'm missing anything

The DVDs that I produce have to be compatible with the widest range of DVD players so I always use DVD burning software to produce the type with a Video_TS folder containing VOB files. The machines that you describe (I'd be interested in some model numbers) would save me many hours of transcoding time if available widely among users.

After a bit of poking about, it seems that there are three issues.

1....DVD player must have appropriate software, almost all modern ones & quite a few older ones have this.

2....The AVI file should be written with what is called a "modern" codec (it seems the vast majority are written this way)

3....There seems to be some sort of issue with large file sizes affecting replay (not come across this myself)

My main house player is a Philips BDP 3100 (Blue Ray) around 2 years old

Bedroom also has a Tesco "own brand" 22" TV/DVD receiver that also plays AVI films

Might be an idea to look around places like Currys etc....at the DVD stuff they have & check what they can play.

Thanks to all for the information
i still havent completed transfering the movie made in serif to a dvd that will play on all devices
i cant find which format serif use to make the movie,it looks like its serif's own programme.
hopefuly i will be seeing my computer tech in the next couple of weeks and get this completed .
as i need to get the dvd sent away for duplicating.

When I generate simple DVDs, I use the ConvertXtoDvd software, which is the most easy to use I have found.
Otherwise I use DVD Architect Studio (Sony), but it's much more complicate to use, but allows two level menus.

I am not familiar with Serif Movie Plus, but on looking at its description, it seems that it will burn the movie to a DVD disk as DVD format.Thus allowing the DVD to be played on any DVD player.

The DVD would need to be PAL, for European machines, and you can choose the resolution ie 4:3 or 16:9.

Try using AShampoo Burning Software (Free from Download.com)

Put a blank DVDr in and tell it what type of disk you want to create ie Create a New DVD disk and follow the on screen instructions. Will usually ask you to pick the files you want to include and will sort it for you. Fairly straightforward.

The movie format, compression, resolution, screen ratio and file type etc would be decided by the Movie production software ie Serif in your case. MP4 movies are good for most things.

The best. I use Vegas to produce and DVD Architect Pro to author into playable DVDs. The same software Didier was speaking of.

Anyway, every video format is converted to MPEG2 when generating a DVD, the less format conversions are made, the better...
