I'm sure at least a part of The Savage solo was ad-libbed although Hank probably had a good idea on the themes he would explore. I love the solo that George Harrison played in I Saw Her Standing There, which I like to play on stage. But I've got umpteen other versions of the same song and George's solo is different every time.

I used to hate Hank's Savage solo that he plays now but as it's easier to play but I've learned to like it; that's the version that I play now...

How many times does that occur? It's quite common whether recording or playing live, that a solo just turns out great- often even inspired!- but it's also often darn near impossible to reproduce it note for note again..?

Yes, it would have been virtually impossible for Hank to reproduce that exact sound ever again, had he tried or even wanted to attempt it... and that is highly unlikely! It just happened on the day and remains locked in history. It's a pity, though, that out-takes from the session did not survive... or have they??

hello Savage friends,

Here my version, etap2hw used, I must say Phil Kelly played that very good and original, Jim also has a very good sound
he is using some open strings wich is not original, the sound of Jame street is to clean, needed more body
maybe you are interested to buy the etap james ??? just ring our friend Ecca.
Ecca knows how to play the track, i can only see the live track here, the sound is to treble i gess. the other link is not working.
My version is not 100%, but its a try out, i was using a patch, dont know anymore wich one, sorry, next time I will change it
have a nice christmas,
cheers, tonio

What a great sound ! I know the playing needs some work as Tonio wrote it's not perfect and is very heavy, but that echo sound although a tiny bit over the top is superb. The amp sounds great too, in a nutshell that is THE SOUND well done ! :)

Yep, The Savage had something for everybody; bass, rhythm player, drums and lead.
It was a great test for all and was our standard audition piece at that time for all potential newbies.
The combination of it with Peace Pipe on the back made it a very classy record indeed.

Sounds to me like he dropped a clanger whilst striking the D and G strings whilst playing them rhythmically together and catches the open B string whilst digging in hard and it does not matter because the whole effect taken together is great musically. I do not hear a trem dip on that though. It is of course a sheer fluke and one of Hanks well known mistakes in the recordings he did. I think everybody likes this one though and try to emulate it. :)
