Amazing harmonies - always sounded like at least 3 voices! Great strident rhythm guitar playing too. I would include the Hollies among artists influenced by the Everlys. Listen to the voices of Alan Clarke and and Graham Nash together.

The popular invention of harmony. They were perfectly matched voices that could only come from being brothers. You only had to watch where Phil was looking to realise the reason for the fantastic synchronicity. He never took his eyes off Don's mouth. I'll never forget watching Phil do that.

I'm a fan of the Hollies, I just bought their CD , Butterfly. Sometimes Alan and Graham would go slightly flat together and that used to jar.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bruce's guitar style was influenced by their playing.

Their version of Lucille still sounds fantastic after all this time - remind me who played the solo someone please!

So sad to see another rock n roll idol gone, of course when Hank and Bruce first came to London they sang together as a duo in Everly Brothers harmonies, that's how they got started, and of course Paul McCartney has said that John Lennon and himself tried to sound like the Everly Brothers on their early harmonies too

(I actually found three threads, one in General, one in The Lounge and one in People. I've moved them all onto the same board and merged them here. Iain)

Thanks Iain. :)

I can't add anything much more which hasn't already been said by others - except to express my life - long (since I first heard them aged 5!!!!) 'love affair' with those gorgeous, heavenly harmonies and (often) upfront strong rhythm guitars. "Wake Up Little Suzy", "When Will I Be Loved", "Cathy's Clown", "Crying In The Rain", "So Sad", "Ebony Eyes", "All I Have To Do Is Dream", "Devoted To You"..(OK, OK and so many more) will endure just as long as there is any interest in popular music. Matchless. Yes, of course they influenced the Shads who quite often featured Everlys numbers in concert. Hank (or was it Bruce?) would always quip that they were more like Ron & Bill than Don & Phil! Certainly, in their hey day, the Everlys were amongst the many stars my two older sisters (teenagers then) would 'swoon' over! Plus, of course, as well as his musical ability, John Rostill was invited to audition for the Shadows partly because he physically reminded Hank & Bruce of Don Everly in appearance. Like Tony, I'm so glad that I managed to see the 'living legends' twice when they occasionally toured the UK during the 1980s and 1990s. Timeless classics. RIP Phil.

A non-hit from after the classic period, but a favourite of mine with those trademark soaring harmonies...

And there was their great dual rhythm guitar playing, with wonderful intros and chord based patterns and riffs, often with Phil playing in standard tuning and Don in an open tuning with a capo...and lovely tasty and tasteful electric guitar solos, intros, fills etc by great accompanying players such as Chet, James Burton and later Albert Lee.

Definitely influenced Bruce, Hank, the Beatles, Hollies, Simon and Garfunkel, Eagles (USA), CSN&Y, MWF etc etc...

Rob, I just noticed your reply (partially quoted above) and I just wanted to say that I was thinking the same thing but thought I was imagining it. Ever since Phil Everly passed away, I have been watching numerous videos on Youtube and Googling lots of images of the two brothers, and I kept thinking how much Don looked like John Rostill. Phil had the great hair like Bruce, but he otherwise didn't look much like Bruce. But Don Everly and John Rostill look like brothers themselves. Rest in peace, Phil Everly.
