Did anyone see the two TOTP:1979 documentaries (well one doco, one compo) that were shown the other night on BBC4? A couple of shots of the Shadows here and there, so I am filled with optimism and hope! What a fantastic year it was.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, by the way!

Just checked it out on Iplayer. A great year for music - extremely varied. But the shots they used of the Shads were basically to show how bored the audience was!! (Particularly on the Argentina clip!)

The Shadows were in their late thirties by then, and I think the Top Of The Pops audience was of a younger generation and probably preferred disco music or maybe punk. Also, during "Don't Cry For Me Argentina", Hank looks a little uncomfortable.

According to next weeks Radio Times, there is another appearence by the Shadows on next Thursday's show. I was 16 at the time and remember the huge sense of pride that the Shadows who have always been my favourite band, were appearing alongside more up to date bands such as Blondie, Elvis Costello and the attractions and Ian Dury and the Blockheads. I always held it against Ian Dury for nicking the No one spot from the Shadows though !.
How many TOTP appearences did the Shadows make, and is there a list of them ?

Pass.

I can only remember Shadows' TOTP promo appearances for: The Rise And Fall Of Flingel Bunt (on film), Don't make My Baby Blue (studio) A Place In the Sun (studio), as well as the HBM A-side London's Not Too Far (with a Shadows B-side).

Perhaps there was an appearance with Mary Anne, but I don't recall one.

Other "first career" singles postdating the 01/01/1964 introduction of TOTP (but which I don't remember being used there) were:

Theme For Young Lovers
Rhythm And Greens
Genie With The Light Brown Lamp
Stingray
The Warlord
I Met A Girl
The Dreams I Dream
Maroc 7
Tomorrow's Cancelled
Dear Old Mrs Bell

I say edit out EVERY DJ, and therefore increase the amount of music!! TOTP2 is good in that respect, you just get wall-to-wall music with little captions if you want to know more. Interesting that George Ford was shown with the Shads as their bass player on TV '79-80, but did he ever actually play concerts with them?

Francis,
George Ford did play concerts with the Shads. He was on bass for the early 1980 spring tour of Europe. I can't remember why Alan Jones was unavailable for this tour? Perhaps he was busy doing session work, be that live or in the studio, and due to this couldn't commit to that particular Shads tour? He was back on bass later in 1980 on tour with the Shads.
Over to you Mr Nugent!

On one occasion in 1979, I think for Theme from the Deer Hunter, George Ford and Alan Hawkshaw appear in the studio with the Shads - thus effecting a kind of Checkmates reunion!
