It's odd that Bruce is seen with the Jazzmaster and was in various shots at the time toting one, could it be they were all done on the same day on a borrowed guitar, and given that he was associated with a Jazzmaster and a white Tele at the time I wonder why he never played either one?

In some ways either guitar would have given a slightly different tone to Hank's Strat and maybe stood out a bit more in the mix, certainly for live performance if not on record.

Perhaps it was just that whilst today people seem to have rooms full of guitars in those days two was a lot.

Would be interesting to know where and when it was shot and who was the director...

I believe it was directed by Jack Good. Cliff refers to it in his book "Me and My Shadows". It's on a par with Jet's "Man From Nowhere" (with him standing on a glass stage, from "Just for Fun") for coolness!

Hi Pat,

Well I tried and you caught me out !
But the theories rage on, even what guitar Bruce used, long may they continue.
See you all on Sunday, playing bass with a pick, at last !

There are plenty of live performance video clips and live performance photos of Bruce using the Vega, the Grimshaw, the Jazzmaster, the Telecaster, (and then later)the red Strat, white Strat etc. There are also numerous shots of him using some of these electrics and various acoustics in the studios also.

Of course, both types of guitars were used in video clips/TV shows/films which performances were mostly mimed anyway...

As far as I am aware, he (and Hank) generally only used acoustics (Martin, Gibson) live on quiet ballad type vocals by themselves or with Cliff..usually close to vocal mikes, like the Everly Brothers did back then- there weren't any piezo pickup equipped acoustics in those days.

This shot of Jet, probably from around the same time as the video, similarly shows his JH initials on the upper horn of his PB!

I had those gold stick on initials on my red Galaxy, in my case G P M from memory they came from the luggage dept of Bearmans in Leytonstone.

Our band which became The Foe was originally called The Oaks ( we did a garden party gig hadn't got a name when the local paper interviewed us, and the first thing Terry our rhythm and spokesman saw when he looked around was a couple of Oak trees - sadly despite some hearty attempts at the various hits of the day we were describe as a Blue Beat group which was a long way musically from The Kinks Beatles and Stones numbers we'd performed) I digress the homemade amps as previously mentioned all carried the logo O E M and were covered in that foam filled quilted black vynil, a couple of years later Tery swapped his for a 12 string Eko acoustic at Ron's Music shop in Ilford.

Mine stayed around until the late 70's when I sold it by which time it was a speaker loaded (still the original 12" Fanes now assited with a tweeter) for my disco consul, whilst it had been re-covered with proper speaker vynil and baffle fabric it still carried the O E M logo, it wasn't entirely a success in this role as once the power amp progressed from 30 watts to 100, whilst it was assisted with a couple of speaker cabs stand mounted either side, on bassy numbers it used to make the records jump, in the end the speakers were kept in for the weight so the assembly didn't fall over but on louder gigs it was never plugged in.

Sorry chaps and chapesses I've digressed from the original thread.

Bruce got his Jazzmaster probably in early 1960, and used it until march/april 1961 when Hank and him got the rosewood neck strats from JMI.
He can be seen playing the Jazzmaster on some videos.
He certainly never owned or recorded with a Tele, but he did played with one. I have seen him at the Paris Olympia in 1961 with my own eyes playing one ! (certainly a borrowed one).
There is also a video where Bruce can be seen playing a Tele.

There is an earlier Hand Jive video with Bruce playing his Jazzmaster.
