I didn't think The Drifters/Shadows appeared in "Serious Charge", Rob.

They're certainly in "Expresso Bongo" though.

Thanks Jim. Me getting 'wires crossed' again - yes I was probably really meaning to say that although Cliff starred in "Serious Charge" that (legally) neither he nor the Shadows could go to a public cinema to see it - crazy!

Bests...Rob :D

Surely they could because 'X' certificate films could be seen by anyone from the age of 16 onwards.

I'll have to dig out Bruce's autobiogrpahy again and see what his precise wording on the subject was.

Correct (at the time).

I think the confusion has arisen because later (from 1970), the X certificate was amended to allow only 18-yr-olds (and older) to see a film with that rating. Over the (now, fairly long) period since 1970, the original "16" threshold has largely been forgotten and the current "18" boundary is in everyone's consciousness.

From my memory of living in the UK during the 1950's, didn't you had to be 21 to get into an X film?

I don't recall much of any Shadows appearance in Serious Charge, or did they just play Chinchilla somewhere on the soundtrack? Wasn't the plot about Cliff as a young tearaway supposedly being molested by a vicar?

I watched Expresso Bongo again on a videotape recently- more Shads appearance in that film, also an X Certificate back then? Hank had the first Strat, Bruce had the Vega and Jet played a Framus bass. Meanwhile Cliff (as Bongo Herbert) was being seduced by the much older American lady vocalist!

Nope - 16 and above. See Jim's link (above).

It wasn't Cliff who was allegedly molested, it was the character played by Andrew Ray (forgotten his name). He made the (untrue) allegation against the vicar (Anthony Quayle). You can hear Chinchilla coming out of a jukebox. The film features the original "King Creole-esque" arrangement of Living Doll before Bruce's re-arrangement which made it into a No. 1!

This video was mentioned in another thread, but I just discovered it today. It is highly relevant to this thread, so I have taken the liberty of posting the linl.

The answer is "yes, Cliff did play on Apache - as lead guitar! :)

Interesting to note the Telecaster that Bruce never played. And the three Vox amps.
