"Jigsaw" review from 1967

Postby JimN » 18 Jan 2014, 18:31

A month or two back, some of us cast our minds back to the review of "Jigsaw" published in the magazine "Beat Instrumental" in the summer of 1967.

I now have a copy of the relevant edition and have scanned the review.

Enjoy:

"Perfect example of a vocal-turned-instrumental", eh?

I wonder whether you could say that about We Don't Need Another Hero, Don't Give Up or I Want To Know What Love Is?

Quite! And, anyway, I think there are some great tracks on Side 1 which, I suppose, confirms that one man's meat etc.

Do we know who wrote the review?

Cheers.

We all have favourite albums. 'Jigsaw' is mine. I know it's not a great favourite with many people out there who prefer the classic (and wonderful) Hank, Bruce, Jet & Tony lineup/sound. But there's a great deal in those grooves that repay close listening. I won't bore the pants off you with what pushes my buttons about this collection of toons, but Stardust and Tennessee Waltz (from side 1) must surely rank highly alongside Sleepwalk & Man Of Mystery. The Bennett/Rostill sound is (to my ears!) easily equal to the Jet/Tony combination. If you have passed it over previously, give it a whirl.
Love to all,
Mart.

I recently bought two copies of Jigsaw on vinyl from ebay - one mono, one stereo. For some reason, I prefer the mono version. BOTH SIDES are pretty good!!!

Just caught up with Iain's posting immediately following mine. I'm only guessing here, but is he referring to the article or the validity of my observations. Wait 'til I see him at.........................somewhere! I'll de-tune his G string.
Love, anyway.
Mart.

"To each, his own" I guess...but I certainly cannot agree with this review. Since The Shads' work spanned 50+ years, it is difficult to select a favourite album (especially with all the personnel changes), but "Jigsaw" and "From Hank, Bruce, Brian, and John" are certainly in my Top 5 favourites. Looking back on it, how silly does the reviewer sound to complain that all the good songs are on the same side of the album (which isn't true any way)? He wouldn't have that problem now, with digital music...just construct your own Playlist in whatever sequence you want. How someone cannot love Tennessee Waltz and Jigsaw is beyond me.

Cheers,
Donna
