Around about the same time, John was offered the bass guitar job in the Tornados, following the sacking of Brian Gregg ( a very fine player ). Gregg had replaced Heinz 6 months previously. Perhaps not surprisingly (although he must have been flattered), John decided that playing bass for (at the time) the UK's biggest group and the UK's biggest singer, was the better option.

Yes, I'm sure that must have seemed to him the best move at the time, considering the Tornados best days were more than likely behind them.

And that's when he auditioned.

Was it the surgical precision of his playing that got him the gig? Or was it a stitch-up?

How ironic that his band had a theme like that...surgical costumes. I had always wondered whether John was a very serious type of person and would have had to adapt to The Shadows sense of humour, etc. But I suppose if you were used to gigging in a surgical costume, anything The Shadows did would seem tame...the silly song titles, the choreography, the funny voices in Chelsea Boot, etc. All this was done whilst wearing a tuxedo. :D

Thank you for all the valuable information. There's certainly nowhere else that I could have learned about John - other than this Site and its Members.

Cheers,
Donna

I believe John hated doing the 'Shadows Walk' but he joined in on their silliness! :D

I finally found a photo of The Terry Young Five. Always wanted to see John before he joined The Shads. God rest his soul. I miss him.
