Perhaps "the most influential guitarist" would be a more realistic assessment and less prone to individual preferences. Then, in addition to Hank, the list would also include guitarists like Link Wray, Duane Eddy, and Dick Dale . . .

What does, 'GREATEST' actually mean? Such lists, as well as being totally subjective, are pointless without also stating the parameters used in compiling them.

I agree with what Dave said.
What would be more fun is to have a list of guitarists who have almost, by their sheer mastery of a particular style, almost convinced others to put their axes in the bin
Albert Lee would be top of my list.

These lists are just a complete nonsense. What might be slightly more meaningful would be to say "who is the most INFLUENTIAL (pop/rock) guitarist of all time?" Hank would certainly rate pretty high in that!

Clearly the list that started this is pointless. Apart from names others have pointed out, what about jazz and classical guitarists such as Segovia, John Willimas, Julian Bream, Martin Taylor, Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, Tal Farlow .......... etc., to name just a few!!!

Wasn't Nancy Wilson the guitarist in the 1980's band Heart?

If I recall correctly Barbara Lynn was a black American lady r'n'b 1960's vocalist who played some tasty electric guitar ?

Correct, for certain values of "tasty".

I saw her live at the 2012 Guitar Geeks' Festival in Los Angeles. I don't want to be unkind, but the phrase "over-rated" might just be apt here.

All this thread proves is how little people know about people who play the guitar.

The only Nancy Wilson that I know of was a black American lady singer who recorded on the Capitol label in the
1960s but she was not a guitar player as far as I know!!!

Mike

p.s her best known recording (you don't know) How Glad I Am
