You're correct, of course, Jim. I just don't recall having seen a closeup of the white colour scheme with the mods.

Stuart - indeed so. They apparently did the whole thing - the steps, the swinging of the guitars, are shortly thereafter Bill Cotton asked them to do 'the Contest'.

It was like that (still blonde/tortoiseshell) when I saw Hank performing (as half of Marvin and Farrar) at Bailey's nightclub in Liverpool in about October 1974. Fender WRHB at the bridge, Fender Strat single coil in the middle and Gibson embossed humbucker in neck position.

There were other alterations made later, including rewiring so as to enable the Fender WRHB to be coil-split (as well as gold plating and respraying in black).

This makes me wonder which tracks they played during that concert.

Good point. Yes, I was going to ask that too. We know, don't we?, that they did some numbers on their own AND with Cliff. It would be interesting to know what was played and sung...

My guess (but only a guess) is a set along the lines of the one from the then recent "Sounds On Sunday" radio broadcast: a couple of tracks from the "Rockin' With Curly Leads" album, probably "Turn Around And Touch Me" and "Jungle Jam", both from the earlier single, a couple of the early hits and maybe even one or two Marvin, Welch & Farrar or Marvin & Farrar tracks. With Cliff they probably performed some of their early hits as well. Has this concert been recorded and/or broadcast?

On 27th October 1974, Cliff (backed by The Shadows - Hank, Bruce, Brian, John Farrar and Alan) sang Willie and the Hand Jive, Don't Talk to Him, Bachelor Boy, A Matter of Moments and Power to All Our Friends (from the set list section of "Cliff" by Patrick Doncaster and Tony Jasper). No mention of what The Shadows performed but I would guess their set would have included a fair number of MW&F and M&F songs which obviously impressed Bill Cotton. I wonder if they knew he was in the audience scouting for possible Eurovision contenders! (On 9th March 1975 their set at Fairfield Halls, Croydon included Lady of the Morning, Black Eyes, Lonesome Mole, Turn Around and Touch Me, Faithful, Tiny Robin, Marmaduke, Music Makes My Day, Silvery Rain, My Home Town, the rock 'n' roll medley and Let Me Be The One plus 12 Shadows hits and Honourable Puff Puff.)

Thanks Phil.

By the looks of it, the photo was published in the Daily Mail, I have checked the Mail photo archive website and it is available, with another variant, at a not too unreasonable price!
