I reckon there would with the vari-speed, I can do it easily with my ESE and the Catalinbread pedal.

After studying the circuit diagram there the head selection is achieved with a six way rotary switch and none of the selections would give just a 320mS repeat.

The Echomatic 1 is a six head machine and head three does give a repeat with the right timing, but it cannot be selected on its own.

Were Binson's around by then ?

Hank was said to have used a Baby Binson 1961 onwards

I've had 2 Binsons in my time but neither would generate a single echo.

I read the binson Echorec had trimpots inside that could alter the head levels ... was wondering if maybe they turned some heads down .. however the echo timing was fixed around 310ms so maybe not a Binson but just thinking out loud. But 320ms according to Robby and a tad more to some others maybe that is not that far off ? The echorec2 could do slapback echo I read

.....or possibly put sellotape over heads not required

Was Sellotape invented when this was recorded?

Didn't the Binson follow the Meazzi and not precede it ?
And anyway the head spacing was wrong
.......and Sellotape doesn't shield magnetism.

Tab mentioned that Unchained Melody was recorded in March 1961. Hank was already using the Echomatic 2 in Jan 1961 (e.g. Find Me a Golden Street, Kon Tiki) and this machine could produce a single echo by turning down the levels of heads 1-3. However the delay for head 4 was usually around 350-360 mSec, longer than the 335 - 340 mSec measured for Unchained Melody. There is evidence that he had a variable speed version with tunes like Zambesi recorded using it running slower than normal (head 4 delay around 420 mSec). We had presumed that the 360 mSec delay was the maximum speed and, if so, it would rule out this machine being used on UM. Maybe it could run faster? If not, my guess would be that the echo was produced by a tape delay in the studio.
