QUATERMASS AND THE PIT - I have the contemporaneous Goons take on that. Brilliant.

George Geddes and I were chatting recently about these old tv and radio shows and one that cropped up was "Journey into Space" a radio show of the late 50's. ( I didnt realise George was THAT old)
Hands up anyone who remembers that one.
Anyways he said that this show was being aired on BBC radio 4
Doing a search turned up this web site:

http://www.otrfan.com/otr/serials.php

What I didnt know was that there were 3 space serials.
So, if anyone is interested all 3 are available on this web site.

BTW I did see the tv version of Quatermass but I thought the film version (by Hammer Films) was much scarier.

The tv show is on you tube:-

enjoy.

Ah yes, 'Journey Into Space.' I remember it very well as my favourite radio programme when I was a kid in the fifties. I couldn't move from the set even though at times I was frightened to death.

Without resorting to Google, I can recall that Andrew Faulds (who later became an MP) was Jet Morgan and Alfie Bass (later in The Army Game) was Lemmy. The other two main characters were Doc and Mitch but the names of the actors who played them escape me.

Cheers.

David Jacobs was also in it and announced the beginning of the programme for good measure. Apparently David Kossoff played Lemmy before Alfie Bass did.

Great tune but not a Shadows "spoof" title. I remember playing it at home on my Dansette back in the sixties as I was learning to play it. My mother, who had been a wren officer during the war, popped her head round the door and said "I remember that. We used to sing it in the ward-room with rather bawdy words, so I'm not going to sing it to you!!!!". That memory has stuck in my mind ever since, and every time I hear it I think of her and wonder what the words were!

Despite colour and all the latest effects - dont you find the old black and white films were more scary and had much more atmosphere? :?

I didn't say it was an original Shadow's tune, Brian, but it IS a spoof title. The original was titled Quartermaster's Stores and is a well-known wartime song with, as you say, very bawdy lyrics. The Shad's turned it into an instrumental and changed the title to the spoof, Quatermasster's Stores .

That's the one, Ian. By the way, Quartermaster's Stores was originally an American song and adopted by the British soldiers in WW2. The same sort of thing happened with Lili Marleen.

This is Pete Seeger's version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gB6KqTxrHWE

I never noticed it was spelled that way until some years back, when the fact was pointed out in this forum. Now I know it was an American song. Learn a little along the way.

It is not one of my favorites, but I will try to play the piece for old times' sake.
