Hank in Guitarist

Postby Martin Page » 31 Mar 2014, 12:23

I see there's an interview with Hank in the latest (May 2014 [sic]) issue of Guitarist magazine. It's the 60th anniversary of the Strat so it's nice to see Hank included in one of several articles about the legendary guitar...

I wonder if there will be an anniversary concert for this memorable occasion, maybe with the proceeds going to charity, just like "The Strat Pack" in September, 2004. Last week, I just finished watching the Blu-Ray edition of this event. I already had the original DVD issue, when it was first issued in 2005, but also wanted the extras with Hank and Ben on the Blu-Ray edition.

In a footnote to the article, (which is about the various Strats he's used in his career) it mentions that his new album, 'Hank' will be released on 2nd June...

Yup, it's on Amazon, but no track listing... Single CD on the DMGTV label, which means his label mates will include Aled Jones and Daniel O'Donnell!

Is this new material or just a compilation?

I really would like to know too! Hopefully an album of (mainly) new original material, or will it be another one in the series of "Hank Plays..." or primarily cover versions albums?
Slightly off-topic, but does anyone know when the Blu-Ray edition of "The Strat Pack" was released (month and year and maybe also day)?

It's out TODAY!!!

Just been looking at it - nice long interview with Hank and loads of great pics right from the early days through the 60s, 70s and beyond! MOST of his Strats seem to be featured.

I may well buy it later...

A couple of interesting points raised by Hank in the interview article.
He seems to think that the Fiesta Red / Rosewood board Strats may have been resprayed white, so that might
account for the all white including scratch plate Strats as seen in the photos at the NME Pollwinners Concert in April 1963.
Whether they then got brand new white Strats with the addition of the Tortoise Shell scratchplates a few months later isn't noted,
but could indicate the set where tuning problems started?
He then states that for the Cliff/ Shadows Reunion Album, that his Strats were fitted with 57 reissue pickups, but possibly he means
Custom Shop 54 type which I think were utilised instead of his usual Kinman choices?
Again if anyone knows anything different, please add to this topic.

I fitted various pickups (including some 57/62's) to one of Hank's guitars for him to try out prior to the Reunited tour and he settled on the CS54's, which were subsequently fitted to all 3 of his CS Strats for the tour. I guess that he forgot their identity at the interview.

Just to add to what Paul says. In discussing the 50th anniversary guitar and pickups I asked Hank to try the guitar with the AY pickups before just swapping out for Kinmans. We then discussed CS54s and the fact that noise was less of an issue due to the change in stage lighting to LED and thus less transformers and hum. He said that Paul and a couple of other people were advising CS54s for an authentic tone.
