Neil Young Shadows fan

Forgive me if many posters already know this, but I just discovered a Neil Young track "From Hank to Hendrix" which appears on his 1992 "Harvest Moon" album. I knew Neil had already recorded a Shads tribute with his version of "Spring is nearly here" in a duet with Randy Bachman, but I didn't know about "From Hank to Hendrix" which I've just heard on Youtube and is excellent. Of course anyone who starts his career doing Shadows covers obviously has excellent taste and is destined for great things. I wonder if there are other songs which pay tribute to Hank and the Shads? I know Cliff was name-checked in Argent's "God gave rock 'n roll to you".

I think The Beatles' (or rather Tony Sheridan and The Beatles) instrumental "Cry For A Shadow" was a tribute to The Shadows. Also, Tol & Tol's instrumental "Rounding The Cape (A Tribute To...)" was also a tribute to our heroes, if the subtitle "A Tribute To..." is anything to go by.

The Alan Parsons Project track 'You Don't Believe' is subtitled (A Tribute to the Shadows) - and it clearly is. On the extended 'Ammonia Avenue' CD.

This could be connected to April 1st or . . . . . it could be Hank Williams.

Neil's first recording band was The Squires and their first single paired two Neil Young instrumentals "The Sultan" and "Aurora". These two tracks were recently included on Neil's retrospective Archive Vol.1 collection and you can hear samples on Amazon. "The Sultan" can be heard in full on YouTube.

Presumably the Americans think it's Williams, whereas we know it's Marvin.

It is Neil Young playing on "Twang" but not our Hank referenced in the title "Hank To Hendrix."

So where's the definitive evidence of who the 'Hank' is? Reading it up I can't find a Young quote on it but many media experts seem to say its Marvin not Williams 'as commonly thought' and emotionally for Young I think our Hank fits the bill, even if he is himself personally happy for the confusion to reign. I'd like to believe it's HBM, and a line from him to Jimi is extremely and elegantly appropriate - so without a quote from Young himself I know what I think!

As far as I am aware, Neil Young IS referring to Hank Marvin in the song...

It is Marvin. A few years ago I read an interview with Randy Bachman, Neil's ex band mate from their early days in Canada, and in it he confirmed the song is about Hank. I also saw Randy Bachman at The Shads concert at Hammersmith Apollo in 2004.
