I think it was a Gretsch too Justin. ( i'm still mentioning the Gretsch Paul, haha!)

Keep us posted Paul. Will be very interested how it turns out!

Also, I have a suggestion Paul. How about starting an new threat on this particular subject under "How to get That Sound" section? I think this interesting subject and friendly discussions deserved a dedicated section.

Hi Everyone,

I have done the sound files and am trying to upload them to a new thread, as Robby suggested. However, so far no luck. They are each about 1.2meg long, is that too long for an attachment on this site?

As a preview: In general, It was interesting how close the M and BN sounds were after some equalisation (as suggested by John) , the main difference being a slightly more "juicy" sound for the BN combination but more tonal variation from note to note due to the phase cancelling or reinforcement of the two pickups that varies from note to note, particularly noticeable in the upwards or downwards runs. My feeling is that the BN combination is possibly more interesting to listen to, but overall the M recording is probably closer to the original, lacking as it does that marked tonal note to note variation.

However, I am sure that others might form a different view and I'm looking forward to hearing them when I can get the files uploaded!

Paul.

Hi Paul, no need for a tin hat as your time and effort is greatly admired,to me the middle p/up sounds accurate but there is that strange quirkiness on Hanks original version, just like 36-24-36.It just leaves the theory of a Gretsch or possibly mid/neck combination on a strat. regards Gary

With the knowledge about the BN combination requested by Hank it is easy to see how that and other sounds went into the Burns as they developed it with a little inspiration from the Gretsch with Zero fret .

Custom Shop 54 type which I think were utilised instead of his usual Kinman choices?

I had confirmation from a reliable source that Hank's Strats were fitted with CS54 PUs for the "Final Reunion" 2009/2010 tour, replacing the former Kinman, not '57 reissues.

The guy that fitted pickups to Hank's guitars Paul Rossiter, has already confirmed this in an earlier post on this thread. :eh:
