Del..."Sleepwalk" was an original instrumental by Santo & Johnny of course. Could you possibly make your intention clearer? Did you mean, for example, how many songs which were originally vocals were covered by the Shads as instrumentals. ? Or vice versa? Bests...Rob

Ah...but then you feature a singer, suggesting vocals turned into instrumentals. "Sleepwalk" was originally an instrumental -but there are obviously a few vocal versions. "Dance On!" (as you mention Kathy Kirby) was originally a vocal by the Avons..etc. So, er, is it just me? I still remain confused.com

OK, straight off the top of my head:

1959: nil

1960: Quatermasster's Stores.

1961: Theme from Giant (it's a song on the soundtrack); My Resistance Is Low.

1962: Perfidia; Sweet Dreams (September); Dance On!.

1963: The Breeze And I; Granada; Adios Muchachos; Las Tres Carabelas; Valencia.

1964: Chattanooga Choo Choo; Tonight; In The Mood; Zambesi.

1965: Brazil; Deep Purple; My Grandfather's Clock.

1966: Fly Me To The Moon (In Other Words).

1967: Somewhere; Tennessee Waltz; Cathy's Clown; Stardust; Semi-Detached Suburban Mr James; Trains And Boats And Planes; Friday On My Mind; Winchester Cathedral; Marie Elena; Green Eyes; Holy Cow; Last Train To Clarksville.

1968: nil.

1969: nil.

1970: Proud Mary; My Babe; Lucille; Johnny B. Goode; Paperback Writer; (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction; Bony Moronie; Get Back; Something; River Deep - Mountain High; Memphis; What'd I Say?.

1971: nil.

1972: nil.

1973: Pinball Wizard / See Me, Feel Me; Good Vibrations.

1974: nil.

All the above had lyrics before they were recorded by The Shadows. Things like Apache and Sleepwalk didn't.

Of the above, quite a few were already commonly treated as instrumentals; for example, Maria Elena and Fly Me To The Moon, as well as the two "West Side Story" songs.

Bet a lot of you never knew that there are lyrics to Theme from "Giant"!

You forgot Blue Star, which was a vocal.

Jim is very much 'on the money' (as ever) especially as an 'off the top of the head' list. Impressive. Up to 1964 add " South Of The Border" and "Fandango".

Thank you......It surprised me how many you all have listed, even these days I play a lot of tunes that started as songs and just use there backing tracks for instrumentals............Works well, so they tell me.......... :D

I'd bet that most listening to this video are hearing a version of the tune by someone other than the Shadows for the very first time:
