Ah, but is it That Sound? They weren't using Vox amps...

Additionally, That Sound is conditioned by the compressors and EQ filters of Abbey Road, meaning that a recording would have to duplicate or emulate those before coming close enough. Not for nothing was the ARiAB unit so named.

and it was also dubbed from disc, the master tapes had been destroyed by fire (i guess they were stored in a vault in South Africa and not Abbey Road).

Not at all, I saw the Shadows at the Paris Olympia in 1961 and the only recording I know which reminds me what I remember is the "Live at the ABC Kingston" (1962).
The "Live at the Colosseum in Johannesburg" EP was poorly recorded, and sounds like it has been heavily filtered and compressed for AM radio airing. I doubt that Abbey Road was involved for this South African EP.

YES it is "that sound" or at least one of them. Whatever the amplifiers, compression, eq, knob twiddling or any other technical thing that may or may not have been applied this is unmistakably Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch, Jet Harris and Tony Meehan.
The sooner we cut through the equipment and focus on the talent the better!
This could have been a rant but I stopped myself ;)

I'm with Peter here.

Yes it was "that sound" it was the live sound at that time in S Africa & I enjoyed it for what it is.
Loads of energy on stage here & what if the recording was not studio perfect, I wish I could have been there to see/hear it :D

Well if the Shads couldn't get 'that sound'in 1961 what chance have today's would be Hanks got? I appreciate that there are differences in echo machines amplifiers etc etc etc bùt under all that there is a basic sound that Hank has.
If you take any legendary vocalist be it Cliff, Frank Sinatra or whoever they have a distinctive sound whatever microphone etc they sing through. Hank too has his own "voice" in his guitar playing. To me this "voice" is "that sound", augment it with whatever you like it will still be the same "voice".
