I'll pre-order mine NOW!!!!!

For those who are interested, I have done an analysis of all tracks on "The Early Years (Expanded Edition) – Their Complete Studio Recordings 1959-1966" in my review of this set, especially on the alternative versions and mixes. It can be found by clicking on the link on Malcolm Campbell's website: www.malcolmcampbell.me.uk.

Hi Ivo. I hadn't visited Malcolm's site for a little while, so I was unaware of your review. Far and away the best. Very informative, considered and balanced. Top notch! For those who may not know /realise...Tim Chacksfield wanted to keep John Tobler's original 1991 notes....but (if you compare 1991 to 2013) I should point out that JT's 24 yr old overview was extensively revised by me! Hopefully there may well be a set covering 1967 - 1980 at sone future point in time. We can but hope...

I've just bought the set from Amazon and I was given the option to download the tracks instantly. The Wonderful Land I have downloaded is the mono version in electronically reprocessed stereo, with the tom overdubs. I'll report back further when my CDs arrive. Could it be that PLG have got it right on the CD, but sent the wrong version out for the downloads?

The version on the box set is the true stereo rendering without the drum overdub. It seems that Amazon have simply linked the download to a version already on their server, from some other compilation.

Cheers Jim. That's highly plausible. The Amazon business model's quirks continue to amuse me. Buy the MP3s for £14.99, or buy the CDs for £12.87, and get the MP3s free.

I recently noticed that the box set is missing both 'The girl from Ipanema' and 'Leave my woman alone' which i believe were both recorded in 1965, and also missing is 'I can't forget' which i think if i remember was recorded in 1966. All these tracks have stereo masters and could have been included.

Hi Roy. Officially released product in the UK was the 'order of the day' for this set. Viz everything that had been issued in the UK (45rpm/ EP/ LP). The first two tracks you mentioned fit the period timewise, but they were not originally issued during 1959 - 1966. "I Can't Forget" dates from 1967.

Bests....Rob

Ah well, maybe 'I can't forget' could be on a volume 2.......
One thing i noticed on this collection was that on the mono version of 'Brazil' the intro seemed a bit well, muffled. I'm wondering there was a fault on the mono master or is my stereo faulty? :D

In fact, there are a few recordings missing. However, to be totally fair and reasonable, "1959 - 1966" here means: "Released by 31st December 1966",not just recorded on or before that date. The Girl From Ipanema and Leave My Woman Alone weren't actually released until the 1990s.

There are already tentative plans for submission of a track-listing for a compilation covering releases from 1st January 1967 to (a date in) 1980 (Black Is Black). Both ...Ipanema and Leave My... would be included, as would I Can't Forget (a 1967 release anyway) and several mono B-sides not so far included on any CD releases (not even the expanded Early Years set).
