It seems Jet's sunburst had a rosewood fingerboard as well. A late 1959+ then.

PS: Jet is playing without a plectrum in that dubbed publicity video. But did he do that live?

i know its all a matter of taste and in the past now but!! i would have preferred the shadows dress code to have continued along these lines instead of the naf suits and bow ties that they went on to wear in an effort to go up market and into the posh club circuit. peter

And an Anorak note - watch at 1.05 - Hank actually plays the later note sequence (as at 2.11) instead of the "slide up" sequence at that point that we all know, and is actually being mimed to.
I think Hank realises too as his grin seems to have a bit of "oops" about it.
cheers

It was probably the times, Peter. The Beatles were also asked to dress "respectable" a bit later. The Ventures on the other side of the pond also wore identical suits or clothes, and, surprisingly in this tropical country guitar bands then wore suits at parties. The period in which guitar bands became popular is sometimes called the "sweet" period, a reaction to the wild rock-and-roll era that preceded it and the US establishment's crackdown on the likes of Elvis and Chuck Berry. Everyone became clean cut until toward the mid-60s, when the music scene took another turn.

Sharp eyes, Ian.

I suppose that Hank was the least affluent, as Bruce and Jet already had high-end Fender guitars. Bruce especially with that Jazzmaster.

Visually, Jet was the odd man out here with his tort pickguard. No Customshop in those days and probably not even pickguards in the market. Fenders were so new in the UK.

When Bruce & Jet each had sunburst Fenders' with tort pickguards, you could say that Hank was the odd one out visually.
It was Jennings who gave them the matching red guitars around the time of the filming of 'The Young Ones'.
The design of the P Bass back then was always with a tort pickguard in the Fender catalogues for the UK and I still prefer the look, they gave a classy look to them. The white pickguards did appear later on the basses. The early ones were anodised, I don't like those at all.

True, Dave, but most don’t associate the Shadows with the sunburst Jazzmaster and Precision Bass. That may be different in the UK, which saw the Shadows earlier than the rest of the world. I didn't know the Shadows ever had them till I joined these forums.

On an individual guitar, I like the tort pickguards. It is just that, when the Shadows decided to have matching guitars on stage, it would have been visually more complete if the pickguards matched, too. But then Jennings probably wanted the standard products promoted. (And Jet, being the showman, probably didn’t mind the distinction; after all, he always took center stage.)

Yes, the iconic 1957-1959 gold-anodized pickguard wasn’t high on my list, too. I thought it would be quite dull and unattractive. We just needed to complete the vintage Ventures set. (Now that is a mixed set of pickguards!)

Therefore, I wasn’t overly excited about this new Customshop. In contrast, I was quite excited about Anna’s “Hank Marvin” P-Bass – it’s a flashy guitar – and so was Fender’s Customshop, I was told.

That is why my jaw dropped when I first saw the new sunburst guitar. I did not expect it to be so beautiful. It took my breath away and also Anna’s. Even the aluminum pickguard, which gleams as it moves, is actually attractive. Perhaps it is the finishing and extra oomph given by a Masterbuilt guitar. I agree it’s quite expensive though.
