The Early years 1959-1966 CD

I recently noticed that the box set is missing both 'The girl from Ipanema' and 'Leave my woman alone' which i believe were both recorded in 1965, and also missing is 'I can't forget' which i think if i remember was recorded in 1966. All these tracks have stereo masters and could have been included.

In fact, there are a few recordings missing. However, to be totally fair and reasonable, "1959 - 1966" here means: "Released by 31st December 1966",not just recorded on or before that date. The Girl From Ipanema and Leave My Woman Alone weren't actually released until the 1990s.

There are already tentative plans for submission of a track-listing for a compilation covering releases from 1st January 1967 to (a date in) 1980 (Black Is Black). Both ...Ipanema and Leave My... would be included, as would I Can't Forget (a 1967 release anyway) and several mono B-sides not so far included on any CD releases (not even the expanded Early Years set).

There's an unreleased track in the EMI vaults called 'Life on Mars', it was mentioned in the notes for The Shadows at Abbey Road but it has never surfaced, i wonder if any of these out takes or unreleased recordings can be issued. Do they still need the Shadows permission?

There are, in fact, more than that in the vault. And I'm talking about finished attempts which could in theory be released.

No, Warner/Parlophone doesn't need the Shadows' permission, but until now, they've respected their wishes.

I think hope any "Later Years" box-set would include studio tracks (plus mono versions where applicable and not already issued) from 1st January 1967 through to 1991/1992 when several "unreleased" tracks were finally released. Completely unreleased tracks would have been outside the remit of the first box and would presumably be outside the remit of a follow-up.

The booklet accompanying "The Shadows At Abbey Road" also mentioned that the track "Life On Mars" was never completed, so not fit for release. There's also a track recorded in 1962, called "Groanin'", which features Hank on organ and lead guitar and Brian on drums. Then there are completed alternative takes of "Gonzales", "Big Boy", "Wonderful Land" and "Guitar Tango". Also, there's a version of "Maggie's Samba" with a different overdubbed organ break and the edited single/album version of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" without the overdubbed applause from Cliff Richard & The Shadows' reunion concerts.

Isn't there also a demo of a track called 'Blues in an unfurnished flat'? I'm sure i read that somewhere.
There's a lot of unreleased stuff in the vaults but is unlikely to be released, some was also destroyed at the time by Norrie Paramour as was deemed not worth keeping.

Most of what is still in the vaults, including those that The Shads didn't want released, have 'escaped' and can be found among collectors. Not sure that all that remains will see the light of day, but who knows.
