Hi Donna

Hank didn't use the Double Six on Don't Talk to Him. He double tracked the Strat. He told me this in the mid 1960's so any 'loss of memory' would not have applied then!!

In fact, other than the Gibson B-45 (My Grandfather's Clock, Chelsea Boot, etc), it's doubtful that Hank ever used the 12-string guitars (whether normally-strung or bass+guitar-strung) on record.

Maroc 7 featured the sound, but that was another obvious double-track, with both the Burns Marvin "whine" and the use of trem... er, I mean... vibrato.

HI Dave

I spoke to Hank about it because I asked him if there was a chance of seeing the Double Six again and he said he didn't like using it because it was difficult to tune. I mentioned Don't Talk to Him and that's when he said he double tracked the Strat. If you listen closely to the end of the sole, when he plays the intro again, there is a slight mistake where he plays one note slightly behind the other!

Ok did anyone see Cliff and The Shadows on Sunday Night at The London Paladium about Oct/Nov 1963.They did Don`t Talk to Him and Hank played what I presume was a Burns can`t say what colour it was as it was black and white television .After playing that Hank switched guitars to play Dancing Shoes.Maybe he did double track on the record I`ve heard that The Seachers have done the same thing on record. Hank does play a 12string Burns on live performances, another question would be does he play the Burns 12string on the recording of On The Beach?

I remember a previous discussion along the lines of what Stuart has highlighted. There was a theory that Hank had never used the double six on record - and that he had double tracked a six string instead on Don't Talk to Him, On the Beach and I'm the Lonely one.

I can't think of any Shadows records which utilised an electric '12' (or 6 double tracked) sound

Not sure why he wouldn't use it in the studio but plays it live with a 12 string which must be even more dangerous. Why take the trouble of ensuring spot on precision timing - remember more than one take ,when with guitar techs around who could tune, when it could be done with a twelve string. All seems a little bewildering to me bit like Hank does mystic Meg. I reckon he used a12 string and has been winding everyone up hehe

I'm sure that Hank did use the Double Six with the bass strings on at least one recording, I remember him writing about it somewhere back then, maybe the Beat Insrumental.
