One of my favourites too... I love the use of the DeArmond pedal...

I notice that Steve Kirk posted at the end of last year that he had an mp3 version of the single sided version of Maroc 7 and thought that some trainspotter might like a copy, well I am that trainspotter.

I am trying to compile a complete set of The Shadows tracks in mp3 format following the 'Pocket Guide To Shadow Music' and having got to number 168, I have found the first gap. My only other gap is number 531 'Let Me Be The One' from the re-mastered London Palladium Show of 1978

Would it be possible for anyone to send me a copy of either (or both) of these tracks to my e-mail which is goodwin-p2@sky.com

Thanks,
Phil Goodwin

I always thought Maroc 7 was a great single but the general public didn't really go for it at the time. I can remember as a teenager feeling pretty fed up at the time because the Mersey bands were dominating the charts and The Shads were becoming 'old hat' to the kids were were playing to, plus we had to learn how to sing as well as play guitar. Yeah yeah yeah ! 8-)

You can hear the bass strings sounding during the intro and being brought up in volume by the pedal, even though it is actually played only on the treble side.

I always loved 'Maroc 7', that and 'Tomorrow's Cancelled' were criminally overlooked singles - tho' by 1967 guitar led instrumentals had sadly - and wrongly - become seen as 'old hat' ( as indeed being a 'Mersybeat' group also had done - just ask The Searchers !)

The sixties 'turned and twisted' in all directions continually style wise ...by 1969 even acts from 1966 looked dated !

The Shads had somehow got a 'bow ties and tuxedos' image that doing pantos didn't help them either ....

I can't imagine say The Yardbirds or Pretty Things doing 'Cinderella' or 'Puss in Boots' or as puppets in Gerry Anderson 'Thunderbirds' films somehow !

sadly all this must have 'distanced' The Shads from being seen as contemporary or 'cool' in a good few young people's eyes mid sixties and probably stopped them listening to tracks they might well have enjoyed, hence the more adventurous Shads later sixties singles were overlooked by many I feel...

Why they never put fine tracks like; 'Late Night Set', 'Running Out of World', ' or even the excellent production job 'Trying To Forget The One You Love' as the singles 'A' sides is beyond me....

My mum told me that by 1967 listening to the Shadows was considered 'naff!' :D

To be fair, that didn't come out until the following year - and was effectively the last single of the Shadows' first career (Slaughter On 10th Avenue was apparently meant to be a HBM release but was pressed into service to promote the 1969 tours with Alan Hawkshaw).
