Mine was built by Roger Cook, and it was very noisy, Roger had it back and changed two transistors and now to me it is better, but on hearing it for the first time others say "That eTap is bloody noisy".....but I'll stick with it because the echo's are good..........

Enough of this besmirchment of the North Notts thread.
I had a great afternoon , it was worth the 60 odd mile drive.
Hats off to all the players and I did like PJR's playing during the singing
and also Kim's bass playing . Rock solid, note perfect while gazing serenely round the room
taking everything in.

Never had a noise problem with my original ecca eTap or my twin valve eccamatic model but my first RS power supply was very 'Hissy' they sent a new one within 48 hours

At the risk of getting severely told off, I have seen tons of different gear lugged into the North Notts meetings and have yet to hear anything better than the sound that Pete provides with his Boogie and echo. The gear that comes in and out is all good stuff, but I have yet to hear it sound as it can when used to it's potential. Usually there's too much bass and treble added and an over killing of echo volume. Last time I mentioned this a few years ago, someone took his bat and ball home and started his own site.
It isn't for me to tell everyone how they should use their gear, but instead of people chasing around looking for quick fixes in pedals and EQs and the latest gadget, they may find it beneficial to learn how to get the best from a guitar, echo and amp - it's all in there and it's all Hank had on stage back then. :)

I know it is off topic but the question was asked about noisy eTap2HWs ... I have acquired a Stanley Effects pedal eTap2HW and it too suffers from noise which I would say is down too the power supply. Stanley recommend a quality power supply such as the iSpot because of this. I think many quality power supplies have isolation and grounding to prevent this type of noise. So the advice is get a quality power supply for the pedal board folks.

I would agree that the psu can and does make a difference to the background noise. I had a cheapo that I used when I first got the eTap as I wanted to hear how it sounded, but I knew it was only going to be a stepping stone. The one that I eventually ordered was £24.99 + p&p and it was described as a quality unit and it's silent. The only downside, is that the 'workings' are in the plug and if you use a standard electrical extension/adapter, the width of the plug overlaps the other outputs, so I just have to remember to put it in an end socket.

I just got one off eBay Dave £23 with delivery.

I think what is required is regulated and isolated power supply with some ground loop protection as seen in the more expensive inits like the Voodoo Labs power brick power supply ... they are about £160

Ecca had my eTap back for tests after I complained about the noise and he had no noise off it on his bench PSU and so we concluded it was indeed the PSU and you need a good one to prevent the noise issue.

It is a common problem for guitarists pedal boards and the only answer is a good PSU supply.

A noise gate can also help.
