Concert videos/DVDs

I have a dvd of Hank Marvin, playing with his son and Brian May's son on the drums, called 'Hank Plays Live' filmed live in concert at the Birmingham Symphony Hall. Cliff Richard made a guest appearance, to sing 'Move It'.
I just had a look to see when it was recorded but can't seem to find it on the cover or dvd, looks to me like it could be late 90's. The DVD came out in 2004, so it can't be any later than this.

This was filmed at the Birmingham Symphony Hall in 1995 and released on VHS in 1997 and on DVD in 2004.

You can also find three tunes (The rise and fall of Flingel Bunt, Sleepwalk, Apache) played by Hank and Ben Marvin on the Stratpack concert DVD (celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Stratocaster), two more tunes (Wonderful land, The savage) are fearured as bonus on the Blu Ray release.

Hi all

I just have to mention a very odd thing about the DVD The Shadows at Their Very Best, which I bought in the HMV store, Oxford Street, London. There are only about 5 million Finns, and yet there are two Finnish words on the disc: EI MYYTÄVÄKSI. That's perfect Finnish and means "not for sale". HMV sold the DVD to me anyway!

The English text says that the disc is for retail use only and it remains the property of Universal Studios at all times. As they can't make up their mind, I consider the disc my property and will sue anyone who tries to steal it from me.

I just wonder how it is possible that some Finnish has been printed on a DVD sold in Britain! Nothing in Italian, French or German. Only Finnish! Oh sorry, there is some Italian, I believe: Vietato il Noleggio.I think that means the disc is not for hire.

The DVD was in an HMV store and it was not for sale or hire! I bought it but the police didn't catch me.

Hank's concert from the "Hank Plays Live" VHS video, CD and DVD releases, was recorded on December 15th, 1995 at the Royal Symphony Hall in Birmingham, England. The VHS video and CD were released in mid March, 1997, while the DVD was released in about May, 2004, when The Shadows' highly succesful final tour took place. The VHS video features 24 tracks, as well as the DVD release. However, the VHS video features a short introduction of Hank playing "Apache" from the concert, which interestingly features different camera angles than the ones used in the complete version at the end of the concert footage. Also, between the first and second half of the show, TV advertisements of the following Polydor/PolyGram (compilation) albums are featured:
- "The Best Of Hank Marvin And The Shadows" compilation album from 1994;
- "Into The Light" (1992);
- "Heartbeat" (1993);
- "Hank Plays Cliff" (1995).

The aforementioned introduction and the advertisements are NOT present on the 2004 DVD issue.

Further differences are present between the tracks on the VHS video/DVD and the CD release.
Five tracks on the VHS video/DVD are not featured on the CD:
- "Heartbeat";
- "Sacha";
- "Red Back";
- "Oxygene (Part IV)";
- "Shadoogie".

Two tracks on the CD are not featured on the VHS video/DVD:
- "Living Doll";
- "Wonderful Land".

Also, the VHS video/DVD includes much more of Hank's stage banter, as well as extended pauses between the tracks.

I would love to see a compilation of 60's/70's Shadows appearances, there must be vaults full of the stuff, i think Bruce tried to get something like this off the ground but the cost was way to high.

That's true, still it's a good show but seems to have been heavily edited, it would have been nice to see the full show.

Bruce worked with Trevor Popple (lead guitar with The Evening Shadows at that time) to compile a video of The Shadows' early appearances. Trevor showed me a few clips from it when he came to my studio. It never got off the ground because the commercial rights to the material would have cost too much. However, it was seen by Shadows fans when it was played (unannounced) at an early Shadowmania on a screen to one side of the stage.

I would guess that all the surviving footage of the Shadows 60S/70S has been uploaded or copied onto
You Tube by now, so that is probably the lot.
Unfortunately the freebie world we now live in, makes official releases rather unviable, unless of course
footage is of pristine quality, but where there is hope of buried treasure!!!!

There are a few "bootleg" DVDs around, but the quality isn't generally very good...
