Another loss.....I remember Shane Fenton and the Fentones from the early 60's when they appeared on Saturday Club on the Light programme....Saturday mornings after Children's Favourites. They were a good band and had a clean well arranged sound.....Shane reappeared as Alvin Stardust in the 70's and reinvented himself In the world of Glam Rock.

The light programme. Blimey Dave that brings back memories listening on a Saturday morning

I saw Shane & the Fentones live at the West End Ballroom in Brum about 1963. They were a very dynamic band with a knockout stage presence & that powerful Fender/Vox sound. Very professional.

Saw Alvin a few years ago at Northwich - he did the first half of the show more or less as Shane Fenton and the second half as Alvin. A very good show indeed!

My favourite Shane Fenton story is of the time the Beatles had appeared at a theatre, and after the show the building was completely surrounded by fans, so that the Fab Four couldn't leave for their hotel. Shane had some sandwiches and drinks made, and climbed over a high wall to deliver it to them, to keep them going until the fans had dispersed!!

I have a CD, As and Bs of Shane Fenton and the Fentones
It's all but a clone of Cliff and the Shadows, tonewise and vocalwise.
I love it, this was critical listening time for me , 1962.
On most of the tracks the echo on the guitar is straightforward repeats but there is one where it sounds very Meazzi-ish with sort of tripping echoes.
Anyone know what echo he used ?

I guess we have to blame the musical impresarios and A&R guys of the time for that. Cliff and The Shads were raking it in and the Money Men wanted a piece of the action, so many Clones were created. Having said that, I thought they were a cracking group, both with SF and as an instro group.
cheers

Yes, they certainly followed the template set by Cliff and the Shadows, in terms of line-up, instrumentation and general approach (the white Fenders were a difference, though), so it was inevitable they would fall victim to the general accusation of mimicking the former, although, to my mind, the band went on to develop an adventurous sound and style unique to themselves. I wonder if the Shads would ever have considered tackling, say, Take Five?
