When did you first see The Shadows?

The only time that I've ever seen The Shadows was at the Liverpool Empire circa '61/62/63.......unsure exactly which year, but I'm sure that a resident 'expert' will know! I remember being really surprised (and disappointed) to see that 'Jet' had cut his hair really short and changed the colour! What I hadn't been made aware of prior to this show, was that he'd been replaced by Brian Locking hence my puzzlement at this strange-looking Jet persona! This was the first 'concert' I'd ever been to and was dressed in my non-school, Sunday best outfit of C&A sports coat, fawn cavalry twill 'slacks', horizontal-striped, shiny narrow tie with squared- off ends and brown shoes. Managed to get a seat in about the 3rd row from the front, so had a good view of all the gear. I was completely mesmerised by the whole experience. Was also the first time that I'd made the trip unaccompanied from my home on the Wirral over to Liverpool. Wild, exciting times eh........?

26 March 1959 as the Drifters with Cliff. My Dad took me as i was only 12. I remember my hair was plastered with Brylcream to get 'that look'!!! Didnt see them again until '65 at the Palladium panto, and then at Oxford in the late nineties;

Hey Ulrich! Thanks so much for that and for putting the poster up. That was definitely the one! Apparently, (although my memory is a bit vague) my mum's cousin played with (or had something to do with) Chas McDevitt & Shirley Douglas and that is how I got my ticket to see the Shadows. Thanks for the memories.....

March 1965 at the London Paladium with Cliff in Alladdin.
The white Burns & Vox amps. Sound from the backline there too and in-house PA for the vocals.
Preferred it that way, sounded more live as it should be.

Me too. My parents took my brother and I to see that panto at the Paladium, and Cinderella, two years later. We were still schoolboys at the time and didn't get the opportunity to see their regular concerts until they reformed in the '70s.

I only ever saw the Shads once and that was in 2004 in Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.
I saw Hank twice first in 1994 (in Motherwell Concert Hall) and again in 2000 in Glasgow again.

All good gigs. At the 2000 one Hank did not play one wrong or bum note, he was perfect.

The first time for me was at the Paris Olympia in 1961. Tony and jet were still there. The Shadows were the first intrumental group to perform as top of the bill at the Olympia.

Hi Guys.

Liverpool Empire 1962 (just after Jet had departed). I was non too pleased about that I can tell you!

The opening number was Shazam and I still remember the comperes Dailey and Wayne about to introduce them.
Either Hank or Bruce were behind the curtain tuning up and one of the comperes stuck his head through the curtain and told them to shut up.

I had a seat in the second row of the stalls at the exorbitant cost of seven shillings and sixpence!!!

Not long after left Liverpool to live in Sydney Australia and am pleased to have seen every Shadows and/or Cliff show since.

Great days and memories of my misspent youth!
