In 1961,at Leicester De Montfort Hall, with Cliff Richard topping the bill, and The Shads closing the first spot, and then backing Cliff.I was only 11 or 12 ,and my sister and her husband took me for a birthday present. In hindsight, the best present anyone ever gave me.It gave me an impetus to carry on learning to play a guitar,an interest that is just as strong now as it as then.I also saw them around 1967/68 at Coventry theatre, there warm up act being Les Dawson, from Oppurtunity Knocks. The abiding memory from that was a knock out version of La Bamba, Bruce singing the lead vocal. They were excellent vocally ,much underrated . Something else that I remember, was it was only half full, and they broke up not long after.I have seen them since, but the best sound was Norwhich ,2004. I have never since heard Hank sound any where near as good as the two shows they did there. The whole show sounded great, but Hanks sound was outstanding. The Shadows to me sound great in a theatre ,and quite ordinary in an large arena. The sound that everybody raved over on the Final tour with Cliff was nothing to the sound he had that night, and on most of the 2004 tour. The gigs at Birmingham the sound was poor, arena again,as were the Cliff gigs.
