As corny as most of Cliff's films were, I just saw 'Three Hats for Lisa' again, starring Joe Brown, Una Stubbs and Sid James and dating from about 1965....

This film was so bad it makes Wonderful Life look like Citizen Kane or Gone With the Wind- what WAS Joe thinking? They were obviously trying to turn him into Tommy Steele the Second....and Tommy himself made two or three dreadful films way before Cliff!

Second favourite song was 'This Day' sung in the cave and heavily featuring Alan Hawkshaws organ, brilliant song made the hairs on your neck stand up!

Was it Alan Hawkshaw on organ? I thought he was involved with The Shadows' or Shadows-related sessions from 1967 onwards. I always assumed the organ had been played by Norrie Paramor.

I think the film has been considered for DVD release, but the quality of the available source material wasn't considered good enough for transfer to a digital format. I have a copy of the original and only VHS video release by Warner Home Video from mid 1996 and I think the quality is quite alright. The original film negatives must be stored somewhere.

Least favourite song was 'Washerwoman'

Great review of the film, Mark, you've captured the feel just as I experienced it too.

Can't agree about Washerwoman though The echo-ey bongo/drum intro sounds stunning, the girl chorus is almost ethereal, and the way the Shads build up the vocal harmony showcases the talent that would lead to Marvin, Welch and Farrar. I admire the structure of the song, which is much more movie and much less pop group in nature. I know the Shads wrote it; if they also arranged it I take my hat off to them. Even the somewhat banal words raise a smile with me. But you're off the hook. I don't want to hear you sing it. (And you don't want to hear me sing it!)

Ha Ha Iain LOL!! You undersell yourself Sir, I'm sure that the Shadows fans out there would much rather hear your delicate and subtle tonsils and the fine timbre of your voice than the sledgehammer vocals of my 'Boltonian' tones, which below Watford would probably require translation. I don't think that 'EE by gum, here comes t'washerwoman, tha knows!' would pull in many punters!

I've had a brilliant idea, lets leave it to someone else, but I expect you to get the bass line off just in case, matey!!

I bought a dvd copy of this from thevideobeat.com and the quality is just about as good as anything that is not in high def, way better than those youtube vids

A few years ago, I contacted Leo's Den about "Finders Keepers" and they were able to sell me a DVD dub of the movie, so that is a suggestion to anyone who might want to buy a copy...contact Leo's Den. "Finders Keepers" seems to only be available commercially on VHS, but PAL format which is compatible in the UK but not in the US where I live. The colour is beautiful on my DVD copy. I doubt it is high definition, but it is spectacular, especially the scene with The Shadows wearing the blue shirts, playing greenburst Marvins (My Way, Oh Senorita, etc.). I love the soundtrack of the movie, regardless of the plot. I did love the bit where Brian played the piano while they escaped from jail.

If only I could get a good copy of Rhythm and Greens. There's a copy on YouTube, but it's very poor quality.
