Back in 2004 I bought an original 1958 Gretsch 6122 identical to the one that Hank owned the reason being to join in the experiments with Roberto Pistolisi over the rumours that Hank used the Gretsch on Apache.
It was a decent guitar and I liked it enough to investigate the current Gretsch models, leading to the purchase of a 6122Jnr.
This was a nice guitar and better made than the original, but I sold it as I realised I preferred the Gretsch 6120 which I still have in it's place. I also got rid of the old one and recouped my money. So I found first hand that the new ones are indeed a better buy, even though they are built in the Far East and not in the USA. There is a lot of nonsense talked about USA built guitars being that much better, but lately I'm finding it to be the cheaper options are as good if not better than the ones I payed a lot of money for. I would add that Mark Griffiths and Alan Jones played mainly Squier basses and guitars (OK I know Mark did have a Fender too) but I've spoken to both of them at length and Alan tells me all of those basses on his Shadows gigs in the eighties were Squiers and Mark collects Squiers too. At Shadowmania in 2006, Mark joined us on stage with a Sunburst Squier Strat, food for thought?
