Jet bum notes (frightened city)

Postby negninegaw » 01 Feb 2015, 16:40

I took this from from my posting on the recent thread on Frightened city, it did not really belong there (and also nobody answered :-)
I just listened to the slow version of the 'solo’ of ’The Frightened city' (12th fret);
I can’t help thinking that (after the last solo notes) Jet Harris accidentally plays the bass notes to an E chord
where Bruce plays an Am chord. Then after two notes Jet quickly changes to Am. It sounds uncomfortable to me.
What do you think? Do you copy those 2 bum notes when you play it live, because it is more like the original?

Hi Negninegaw,

No mistake from Jet here !
He pays the right two notes of the right chord because just after the break there is an half bar of E.
And only then an Am...
Listen carefully to Bruce: He plays first an E and then the Am and not only always Am ;)

Cheers

Yes, definitely E before reverting to Am. That's how we play it!

I've listened all the way through The Frightened City and everything Jet plays fits it perfectly. However, I would say that Mark Griffiths played it not quite the same on the Final Tour and yet his version is also fine. As I see it, as long as you play all the 'hooks' and maintain the feel of the track throughout, there is room for variation so if there's a note you don't like and another one you think works better, why not use it?

If you want a bum note from Jet, try Man of Mystery :)

I don't really understand the suggestion that there is a bum note involved. I agree with Patrice (and Jim), the half-bar of E before the Am is absolutely correct and without it it wouldn't sound right at all.

Thanks for your ideas. All of you seem to agree that the somewhat strange half bar of E is correct.
I will listen more careful if Bruce plays an E too.

No bum notes as far as I'm concerned, definitely half a bar of E before the Am.
