Atlantis

Postby dave robinson » 02 Feb 2015, 23:44

Just listened to the stereo mix of ATLANTIS and I know many of us have said that there are two guitar parts played by Hank, but I hear two different guitars. For me the intro, middle intro and outro sound like a Strat, the verses however sound more nasal and have a harsh quality that sound like the Burns on the later album tracks (Sound Of The Shadows et al) so when Licorice said to us it was a Strat and told others it was a Burns, it makes some sense. Have a listen on headphones . . . . :)

It would be interesting to listen to the sound on Geronimo then, since it was recorded in the same session.

I just had a listen to Geronimo as well as the undubbed version of Atlantis. Geronimo is a Strat. However the stereo image has been moved somewhat on Atlantis the undubbed version and it sounds like the Strat. Why ? Because I had a mess around with the gear and can get the same sound of both guitar parts on my Strat, by using the neck pickup with the tone reduced giving it a more mellow tone, then using the middle pickup or even the bridge pickup with plenty of Top Boost on the Vox and some compression. I'm not 100% but it's convincing. :)

According a member in this forum a Burns Marvin doesn`t sound "nasal" ! I play in my Shadows band ( Artrio Shadows ) ATLANTIS with my MARVIN - I believe it was a Burns, maybe a prototype !
And what I did say years before - I miss Hanks permanently use of the tremoloarm. In the tune the notes are played very straight - why would a man who was known for this unique style break at once with this tradition to trem nearly every tone in a tune like Atlantis. The little modulations you can hear in Atlantis came out of his fingers not from a tremarm - fingervibrato !
The tremarm of a Burns is not as comfortable than from a Strat. We all do know this from our own experiences. Please hear with a headphone!

PS: Dave I have the the same thoughts with Geronimo ! The notes are played straight !

I can hear permanent use of the trem arm on the original Atlantis (main melody) so that theory is busted, Perhaps the difficulty in distinguishing the different guitars lies in the compressor being used with Shads stuff from 62/63 and throughout the 60s.

IMO not at the end of a phrase what is very typical for Hank! Maybe that you have the "magic ears" - I`m sure thats is it !

Hi Johann, you said he wasnt using the trem on the original Atlantis, I youtubed it,and can hear the trem being used. If my ears were magic I could say what guitar was used but I dont know, just like everyone else. :D

Gary, this is the BURNSsound of my ARTRIO SHADOWS in 2014. Not miked up. My Marvin ( JMI amp ) was very powerful and we muted the microphone on the lead. Only vocals, keys and drums ( OH and BD ) came out of a very small PA ! The video & sound cames from a SONY camcorder which was in front of the stage with one stereomic !
